I can even make out clearly the pattern of our patio chair covers reflected in Rio's eye

I just got an email from C.R. Kennedy (Australian distributor for Pentax) - my DFA*50 is on the road. I may have it as early as tomorrow!

Good times

Counting the days!
The detail is incredible.

There also seems to be purple/green fringing on the wood at the bottom of the picture -- but it is different than I expect, where it is normally on the foreground/background of things. This seems to happen over an area of depth. Can anyone explain what I'm seeing?

The detail this lens captures is superb, as is the contrast at maximum aperture - unusually for a fast lens I'm finding myself lowering the contrast on some images - it does have a little CA/purple fringing in some highlight situations, but it really does seem a class above any other 50mm I've used.

i don't find that lens heavy and large. It is well balanced on the K1 and walking around with is is a pleasure. But then i'm used walking around with the *300 and the 150-450

I picked the lens up from my office on the way into an evening of work. Initial impressions were that it was not as overwhelmingly big and heavy as expected. I guess I'm familiar with the heft of the DFA*70-200. It feels like a natural mate for the K-1.

My evening case was a complicated one, so I was a bit distracted. There was however a brief period in cruise control during which I managed some quick snaps to redress the dearth of humans in this thread so far.

Both wide open. Bigger versions in Flickr, but I can post 100% crops if desired. The detail around the eyes is remarkable.

Here's a deep crop of the second shot. Look closely at the stubble on the assistant's neck, and the detail in his mask and visor. Then shift across to the chief surgeon's nose.

Once again, bigger in Flickr.

Still classic Pentax rendition as well, despite all the modern refinements - I'm wondering how long I can hold out/ what I can sell.
