DA* 55mm f1.4

I photograph a lot of animal rescue fund raisers. They are usually at a park, outside in good weather, start in the morning and end before the hottest part of the day. Thus my usual load out is the K-3ii w/ 16-85mm and the K70 w/ 55-300mm PLM with a wide angle in reserve. This one was on November 3rd, 2018 on the covered patio of a saloon and started at 3:00. Expecting an eventual low light environment and close quarters, I brought my DA*55mm, a 21mm Ltd and 15mm Ltd.

This fund raiser was for The Arrow Fund, an organization that provides free medical care, fostering and adoption services for tortured, neglected and abused animals. My friend Tara was emceeing the event and I usually provide still photographs for promotional use.

Pictured is an Arrow Fund Volunteer holding Chewie. All we know about Chewie is he wandered up to a woman’s home with his nose and part of his upper jaw missing. His right eye was damaged and pus filled. The woman contacted The Arrow Fund who dispatched a volunteer to transport the little guy to the veterinary hospital for emergency care. Here he is, almost ready for adoption, after multiple surgeries to remove his right eye and rebuild his sinus cavities. Despite his difficulties, he is as friendly and fearless as any little dog I’ve ever met.

NOTE: My friend prefers photos cropped square. As I have no social media footprint at all I don’t know why. ( DA*55mm at f2.8)

My besty and I went to the local zombie walk and pub crawl last year. She to livecast it on Facebook and me to photograph it. Neither of us drink but our favorite Indian restaurant is right in the middle of it so there was another reason to go. I took my DA* 55 and my 21mm Ltd. Lots of great zombies but this pair was magnificent. DA* 55mm at f2.8.

Sidebar edit: When I go to an event wearing two cameras people think I’m there in some kind of official capacity and stop to pose. I noticed it particularly at the zombie walk where many zombies pretty much ignored the the point and shooters and the fella with one DSLR hanging right in the middle of his chest. This may be a hint on how to survive the zombie apocalypse. Ditch the DSLRs and carry a Q.

From the Arrow Fund fund raiser shoot DA*55

Another photo of Chewie, the dog with no nose, no teeth, one eye but four legs and a tail. This time in the arms of the event Emcee, Tara Bassett. I love the results of this lens but it seems I have to do everything right to get them. The focus speed is slow and DoF is pretty shallow at f1.4 but if handled correctly the results are wonderful. BTW, I’ve thought of cropping this photo a little tighter but...

pfft - I have a handful of 55's and it's not enough...

only three focal lengths really pique my interest any more: 24, 35, and 55mm

Top of my head 55's:

Vivitar 55/2.8 Macro (I almost forgot!)
Mamiya 55/1.8
K 55/1.8
Tak 55/1.8
Chinon 55/1.7

Ok, not that many... I had a chance to acquire a Cosina 55 (one you feature here often), but couldn't pull the trigger at the time.

35's - I have my share...

but no 24's...

This one is truly a gem... I do not own it, but the examples speak for themselves.
