Took my old, neglected Auto-Takumar 35/2.3 on our annual skiing trip specifically because of the starburst quality:

Resurrecting this since I just found out about this club. This was shot on the DA 15mm ltd, and I wasn't even going for a starburst. The timing and sun angle were just lucky enough to get a good one on the hood scoop as this car was being towed back to the pits.

The DA15 and DA21 are so good for this. Given how many people, over all brands, love starbursts, I don't understand why so many manufacturers overlook this.

From my understanding, it has to do with the aperture blade shape. Most people want that awesome round bokeh shape, which requires an aperture blade design that doesn't do star bursts well. I've seen more than a few that are more than willing to settle for adding the burst in Photoshop.

That is correct (straight blades are required, but not the only factor). Mostly round bokeh can be obtained with straight blades, if you have enough of them. Anyway, starbursts make more sense on wide lenses where round bokeh highlights are not really relevant.

Thanks! I know, it was a surprise.

I'm new to vintage FF lenses, and after this finding I am on the hunt for an A, F or FA standard zoom lens. I'd appreciate your suggestions.

A lot depends on what you are looking to achieve. If starbursts I'm afraid I haven't got a big selection of A or F or FA lenses - just a few here and there - and I haven't really tried to establish which can give those kinds of images other than to look at my FA limiteds (31, 43, 77) and be mildly disappointed (they work but not as well as say the DA 15 and 21 do.
