The 55/1.8 is to me the sharpest lens in my legacy collection. Maybe not the most artistic, but not far behind (the SMC-Tak 50/1.4 I believe is the most artistic in my possession). Also, the 55/1.8 has a nice 3D quality when shooting portraits (I do not post my portraits online, so I cannot give you an example).

What lens is better or worse? I am not qualified to state such a thing. What I can say is that I like better the chrome 55/1.8 (Mamiya) than the Takumar or K 55/1.8.

PS - those shots with the 58/1.7, especially the rooster, are outstanding. I bet that 58/1.7 blows many competitors out the water.
Thanks. I'll probably play around and compare it to some of my other ~50s. I expect it'll hold up well. Picked it up at a thrift shop for $15, attached to a 1000DTL. Both looked new but the lens aperture was stuck. Cleaned the blades and it works fine, but I really need to do a complete CLA.

ETA
Messing around with the MS 55/1.8 and SMC Tak 50/1.4 today. I'd be hard pressed to pick an absolute favorite. To me the Tak has a bit more contrast and I like the color more, but I'll happily use either.

Beautiful shot!

Came across a chrome 55/1.8 and I've been using it a little. I've decided there are way more good/cheap lenses out there than there is time to use them.

Thank you - chrome 55/1.8, that's my little guy right there - beautiful lens. Beautifully sharp at 2.8 - 5.6 and beyond.

I dig your shots, were you wide open? The dog has that 3-D feel I get on some nice portraits (but I shoot those at about 2.8-4 to gain dof)

Thanks Ed.

Yes, wide open. Which is how I mostly shoot with manual lenses. I really need to experiment with DoF a bit more.

Two great, radio-active lenses! I think the chrome version Mamiya/Sekor 55/1.4 is probably my most handsome lens. I just wish my copy was a bit sharper wide open.

Here it is taking a snap (heavily processed) of another radio-active lens:

..and with a Raynox M-250:

It is a nice looking lens, as is the M/S 55/1.8 chrome. I’ve no complaints on either of them for sharpness. I haven’t done a comparison but they seem pretty comparable to the respective Taks.

More with the M/S 55/1.4. Xposted from the Bokeh Club.

I really have a problem since discovering (via PF) legacy glass. I have more interesting lenses than I have interesting subjects to shoot
