in comparison to what other 35mm lenses?
To be fair, those meeting at least the last two of these criteria:

- Film era
- MF
- Non-Macro

I'll automatically disqualify the DA 35 Macro Limited, just for argument's sake...

that leaves me with:

Soligor C/D 35/2 P (M42)
SMC 35/2
Mamiya Sekor 35/2.8 (M42)
SMC 35/3.5

and I can honestly say, right now, that the Soligor 35 is the 800 lb gorilla in this mix... it's a truly exceptional lens...

Nice solid competition there - I've seen what the Soligor C/D can do (and the Mamiya first hand)...

I would argue that you should try a SMC Tak 35/3.5 as well; but the SMC 35/3.5 shares that optical design (with bigger filter thread and closer MFD to the K series).

On my end of things, it is a battle between the SMC Tak and the Rikenon XR, with the latter perhaps having better bokeh, and the tak having more vivid colours. My Mamiya and the M 35/3.5 are a step below these two.

gotcha - I'd like a Takumar 35mm f2, not sure which version I'd rather have (early or late) but that's on my radar...

the Mamiya is underwhelming for me and it is on the edge of being for sale...

That Rikenon is really producing some great results.

I had the 49mm-filter-thread version and it was quite poor. Pretty sharp in the centre wide open but the edges never got really sharp, even at f/8, and that was on APS-C. It's a lovely lens to use simply because it's a Takumar, but optically not great. My M 35/2 is better.

The larger filter thread version may be better, but I haven't tried it.

Hmmmm, I have a FA 35mm f2 AL, but I'm supposing you actually want a photo or two?

I don't have a vast array of photos from this lens, as it's fairly new to my collection. For this one I took the K-x and 35mm for a walk around old Pietermaritzburg. Sadly there are not many historic buildings left, and maintenance and upkeep of them is often neglected.

Random old 35mm m42 stopdown lens. It was anamorphically wide and really flat contrast. After some post-process, then I noticed that the resolution was more than adequate and it didn't fringe at at all. Despite the extra lever, the handling and focus was faster than a zoom lens. Still on a search for a 35 with pizazz.
