Thanks Dave. The Conservatory Garden in Central Park (I've been staying 3 blocks from it the past month)... it should be considered cheating - awesome flora and many bumble bees!
no cheating in taking advantage of your surroundings - that's like saying you're cheating at street-shots because you live in the city, or I am cheating at open landscapes because I don't....

use what you have, make the most of what's in front of you....

So I've almost got the Finance Department to sign off on a 35mm. She just has one question. Since I have the 28 and 40, she's seeing both of them as pretty darned close to the 35. So her question to me (and by extension my question to you) is this. Pixie dust aside, how similar on a crop sensor a different enough FoV from the other two that I need it?

side-step that question and simply explain that the 35 Limited is also a macro lens....

And can take artsy pictures of her beloved roses. Hmm. You may be onto something there.

Rationalizing to myself is the easy part. It would be easier if her hobby was photography too. Hon, I need a lens. Yeah you do!

28, 35, 40 sound so close together, but she has to realize that the equivalent field of view those lenses give you on a crop sensor will be like 42, 53 and 60mm lenses on full frame, so there is much more (50%) space in between those lenses than it seems at first.
e: if you want to dramatize the point even more, tell her the angles of view those lenses give you, the differences will seem even more pronounced!
