question for those who post in this thread and have the M 40 - the original pancake

QuoteQuote:
Description:
Also known as the "pancake," this is the smallest SLR lens that Pentax ever produced. It includes all the features of any other M lens.

In 2006, it was superseded by an even smaller DA version, but that version did not feature an aperture ring.

Silly question. Of course you need the original M 40mm pancake. After all, that's the one that started it all, isn't it? What can a collection be without the 'original', the one that started it all.

Furthermore, you shouldn't need to be reminded this IS the PF, a place where lba's like you and I come together to meet and express our plight. Do it, just do it and be done with it. That is, until the urge strikes again.

The FA 43 is such a reliable and dependable lens. When light gets low, I put it on and am always amazed by the results. Even in simple settings.

Several days ago I bought K-01 with 40mm XS from a gentleman, planning to take it with me everywhere.. but alas, starting from today metro melbourne is under stage 3 lockdown (again) and I feel very dissapointed. So, I just took it outside the house and snap a picture of my neighbour's flower, and the result made me smile.

that pair was literally made for each other:

QuoteQuote:
. . . The K-01's look is also unique: the body was designed by Marc Newson, a celebrity industrial designer from Australia. Have looks taken precedence over functionality? We will address this issue in our review.

. . .The SMC Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 XS lens is a new ultra-compact lens launched alongside the K-01, and it's part of one of the kit options for the camera (the other being a two-zoom 18-55mm & 50-200mm kit). Outside of the kit it's priced at an MSRP of $249, but if you buy it in a kit, you'll save $100 or more. Pentax says that the lens was also designed by Marc Newson, hence its unique appearance.

This lens suits the K-01 perfectly as it makes the camera handle perfectly and keeps it light. The lens itself weighs only 52g and is less than a centimeter long, making the weight of the camera just 612g when mounted. Pentax claims that this is the smallest interchangeable lens they've ever built. It has a 27mm front filter thread, and will accect UV filters of that size.

In addition, the design of this lens matches that of the K-01, and it actually goes along with the K-5 quite well also. . . . .

I've never used an FA 43, so take all of this with a grain of salt; I think the M 40 as well as the DA 40's handle some shooting situations better. Background that come out busy with the FA 43 are not nearly so bad with the M 40 or DA 40's. Part of that, at least with the M 40, is its softness wide open, but the 40 XS isn't as bad wide open. The FA 43 just never really did it for me from shared pictures... I think 40mm on a full-frame camera is a nice compromise focal length whereas with the 43 I might as well just grab a 50 and make do. What would be really nice is a 40mm f1.7 that renders and handles and is relatively small like the M 50 f1.7. I think the Voigtlander 40mm f2 might be closer to that than the FA 43.
