a hint on keeping the press on original cap for the XS

get cheap uv filter that screws on and glue the press on cap onto it.

it turns the press on cap into a screw in cap
Nice idea for saving the lens cap

Questions for those with the 43mm Limited

1 - have you tried it with both a SLR and DSLR

2 - does it still have the " pixie dust " when used on a DSLR

it was designed as a SLR lens ( film era cameras ) as opposed to the DA Limited Series designed for DSLR cameras

I've loved the DA*40mm and used it until I got the FA*43. I prefer 40-ish to the ubiquitous 50mm on APS-C and full frame both.

Here are a few of my favourite shots with the DA*40.

Images with the FA* 43 will be forthcoming in a future thread.

It's even better!

That lens is still my most-used prime, by a fair margin. Also look here:

HD DA 40mm F2.8 Ltd with Pentax K70. I do like this lens, though I keep thinking I'll accidentally lose the lens cap as it is so tiny.

My pleasure. During a Walt Disney World trip, I used the 43 more than any WR zoom or other lens.

On my SMC 40, I simply purchased for a few bucks a clip-on cap and never used the screw-on Pentax cap.

1. Nope.

2. 'pixie dust' imo is something that the Ltds are known for when used wide open or close to. It is most noticeable on FF systems and has a lot to do with the native vignette and distortion that occurs. You can correct the lens distortion in PP but I feel a lot of the charm disappears when doing so. This charm is the 'pixie dust' as well as my aforementioned points about the FA ltds a few posts back.

It's not to say that the FA ltds will do poorly on crop sensors, it's just I feel they were intended for 35mm film/sensors.

Great shots Bernard, I look forward to seeing some of your FA43 ones. I too feel similar that the FA43 is my go to, it's why I call it my workhorse. I would still very much like to try the FA31 however... but I think that purchase will be a long way off for now...

First the lens I will be sharing is the SMC DA 40 Limited. I have the "original" cap but I had to buy it since my used copy came without it. I tired of the constant screwing on and off and replaced it with a fujicolor film canister lid which snaps in and out of the hood like a cap. It is frosted and translucent so I can't use it for a dark frame to do noise reduction in low light but I can cover the cap with my hand if needed.

Here's a few of my favorite shots made with the lens:

Looking at the ones I love - I see that bokeh is rarely a factor. The backgrounds are either too dark or too far or too bland to matter. A few shots with more involved backgrounds see to show a weakness in out of focus rendering perhaps:

I love this shot. But with a little more subject isolation it might have more pop. It would have benefited from a little fill light also.

This isn't my favorite of this series but the color helps show the background rendering. It isn't horrible but it isn't fantastic either.

Silly shot of a silly penguin. The background here is not bad.

I believe you know of my respect, but lack of warmth, for that lens. I'm in the minority.

I like my FA 31 but I'm on the fence about how much I like it more than the FA 35.
