Usually scratches on the front element have little or no effect on IQ. Someone on the forums did some testing on an old lens, using sandpaper and other abrasives on an 18-55 kit lens (IIRC), and there was negligible effect on the photos. My Zenitar 16 is quite scratched up on the front, but the only time I notice it is if I shoot directly into the sun.
Hey paulh, I did do some reading on it... apparently it shouldn't mess it up, but my scratch is a deep scratch - I can actually see the haze it creates on some of the shots - bad haze unfortunately

Eh....sorry to hear that. You could probably replace the lens fairly inexpensively if you wanted to.

Speaking of inexpensive - taken with my $7.00 F35-80 on K10D in June:

I do have the F 35-70 which I love... this one was an add on that I hoped would be nice (specially for the 28mm end of things). It will go into the "for repairs" bag. My next focal range (and likely last) should be a 10-35 or so zoom, if any...

Very exemplary, I seem unable to stop looking for new/old lenses

Yeah... I'm just trying to convince myself. Perhaps the more I say it, the most likely it will happen.

I used the F 50 1.7 on a K-r recently to take a bunch of music performance shots under some challenging low light conditions. Been doing some PP on a few of them, this is one I like straight out of the camera.
