First experiments

Testing the 85mm, I'm really liking what I see! Here are a few portraits shot recently.

Nice images. Would you mind leaving the full exif in the images? Thank You.

If you double click an image it takes you to his website where the data can be seen in the 'view details' tab bottom left

Single click does it, but yeah, that's it

Sure if you want to do that, I won't.

Pentax DFA* 85/1.4 lens profile.
How to instal it for LR CC <9.4 version (Windows 10)

According to information in Adobe official page, the new Pentax DFA* 85/1.4 lens profile is available in CameraRAW 12.4 version, but listed/supported Lightroom CC version is at least 9.4.
I use LR CC v8.1 and don’t want to update, but want to have and use Pentax DFA* 85/1.4 lens profile.
So, the problem can be solved in very simple way.
1. Download and install Camera RAW v12.4.
2. Navigate in Windows explorer to the specific folder: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles
3. Select and copy all the content of this folder (CTRL+A, CTRL+C)
4. Paste/replace it to the another folder: C:\Users\YOUR USER\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles (CTRL+A, CTRL+V)
Done.
If you are unsure about the security of this step, you can copy the folder (listed in step 4) data to another folder before doing so.

I'm either a bit let down or confused by the new lightroom profile for the DFA 85mm, I have been using the lens every day in the Single in Challenge and going back to look if the profile changes anything the differences appear worse or just the same, maybe the lens is already pretty well corrected.

The DFA * 85/1.4 is a very well corrected lens right out of the gate. It suffers from some vignetting wide open to a couple of stops down.
I expect about all the lens profile needs to do is correct that and insert the correct lens identifier into the EXIF data.

Yes , it seemed like some small vignetting was all that the profile changed and mostly I thought not for the better .

As far as I can tell, the lens profile only really corrects the vignette (accurately, it must be said).

I like vignetted images anyway, but I am happy to correct the image then put the vignette size/shape/strength where I want it afterwards.

So it maybe saves a couple of clicks, if that!

Just for fun I added the DA 1.4 converter to the 85mm, it covers the full frame, however out of focus areas seem a little bit "glowy". The bokeh also seemed a little busy or swirly. I don't see a need to use it this way as I have to 80-200, however it is always fun to try new lenses in different ways. Focusing was quick and the lens reports as 119mm in the exif

Now that’s interesting, don’t think it’s the best combination in the world. I wonder if it would do the same thing with the KP - I can’t imagine it would be any different, but it might be interesting to test it out. The in-focus point is still sharp but...

Yes, I'm not a fan of the effect, however the fact that it worked at all surprised me. For quality, which this lens has, I'm pretty sure cropping down the original file, whether on the K1 or KP will give a better result. It does remind me a little of the older soft focus lenses, where 2 images seem to merge, one sharp and another glowy soft image halo surrounds it. I will have a try today to see comparison shots with cropping the lens and the converter to compare the results

tried some test shots with and without the converter, I believe that wide open the converter isn't the best quality but when stopped down a couple of stops it really improves, full frame coverage at all stops
