Inspiring images, everyone - I've been taking the kit lens with me more often these days!

The Sailfish

Dear Pentax, and Pentaxforums users!

Recently I had the privilege to sail to, and around the Isles of Cape Verde, in the Atlantic. These Islands contain wonderfull scenery and beautiful people. Fortunaly most of the Islans are left unspoilt by mass tourism. An excellent venue and photographers dream. Especially Sao Antao, Sao Nicolao, Sao Vicente and Fogo.

After a great but choppy journey to the Isle of Sao Vicente, just an hour or so before reaching the lively harbour of Mindelo, we caught this magnificent Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus). Measuring two meters and weighing around 50kg! The boat was doing some speed and was rocking a lot, besides, I didn't want to get to close to the fight, so I took the shot without carefully framing. It turned out welll, IMHO, after al little bit of cropping. You get quite a view of the action. I wouldn't have liked to be in Nico (the guy with the cap) his shoes, getting down the ramp at great sailing speed, up close to the sailfish...

Please take note. This was not a paid-for fishing expedition but rather a (very lucky) catch. The fish was later sold by the local Cape Verdian we had on board so he could support his family.

Enjoy!

18-55mm AL II

My lens collection has really grown. Lots of old manual primes, a few zooms of different ranges, screwmount Takumars... Some really amazing and "sharp" lenses, some really fast lenses that serve their purpose. But I swear, i just keep coming back to this 18-55mm AL II. I see in my photo library that it's by far my most used lens and that range is where 85% or more of my shots live. I put it back on my sweet little K-01 tonight and was reminded at just how close I can focus in on a subject. This thing does everything. It's not the sharpest lens in the drawer, but it's plenty sharp for any realistic need. Sharpness is over-rated anyway. What matters is the color, the contrast, the bokeh, the look, the handling, the flare resistance, the AF, etc. How do the photos look. This lens is just an undeniable high-performer. It's the desert island lens for sure.

B

This was shot ~3 years ago, original edit was super contrasty and saturated -- I decided to give it another go in black and white. Original 18-55 that came with my K100D Super, used on my K20D.

Tried to go for a grainy/film-ish/dreamy look. Think it worked out alright.
