For the last year or so the weather forecast has been pretty much constant at "Overcast with a chance of rain" which means that rain is more or less a dead cert. I have the 18-55 v2 which I think is a fine lens but is not weather resistant and I don't want to find out the hard way just how much whether it can take. I have both a K200D and a K7 but it's not much use having weather resistant bodies if the lens is not, so I've been thinking of getting the new 18-50 but which version the HD or the DA-L, there is a considerable price difference between them and as far as I can see the one has the HD coating, quick shift focus - which I never use - and a very neat lens hood and the other does not have these features.

I know the 18-55 WR is slightly faster with a longer focal length but it's bigger with a huge hood while the 18-50 is a more discrete lens which is something I really value. I have the DA 50-200 which I use occasionally and I've looked at the 18-135 but I really don't think I would like it simply because of it's size.

I would appreciate your thoughts please.

I can't really recommend a particular version, but any of the WR models should serve you well. I'm still chugging along with my version 1, which works well enough for me. It's gotten wet a few times with no ill effects. I use a plastic sleeve sometimes if the rain is falling hard.

My 16-50 is out for repairs (not sdm), I'm using the original 18-55 I that came with my K-x. A great lens! And this is cropped like a 110 mm lens
