looks to me like you missed focus and hit the hat.
I feel that the 55mm end is fine and much better than the wide end, at least on my copy

The mouse logo is the most contrasty part of the photo. I've seen the camera lock on spots like that if you don't use the AF lock.

Most reviews say the long end is the weaker end.
i am new to the DSLR world and have been doing some reading which is not a good a thing cause just gets me more confused lol. could this be a result of the camera back focusing? i have to many photos that appear to be like this? I get out every weekend at take pictures (need the practice) on average 80% look like this.

It looks to me like the hat was nearer to you, so the lens would be "front" focusing, but that may not be exactly what is going on. Did you select the focus point, or is your DSLR set up on an automatic mode that selects the focus for you? Sometimes the camera in an automatic mode picks a focus point that is not what you intended. There are numerous other threads about these focus errors, and you might want to search them or possibly start a new one if you can't find the answer. This thread is primarily for posting kit lens photos.

Was going to get rid of it

But then I made a print from a shot I took with my 1st Pentax DSLR, an iST with the kit lens.

By the way, over in the thread on DA70 vs. FA77, you's see a photo I took where the same thing happened. A contrasting object in the hair hijacked the point of focus in low light.

Those are at the sweet spot for this lens and stopped way down, but these shots and some over in a thread on the 55-300 are good to remind us what these lenses can do with good lighting and low ISO. So much of the sharpness issues alleged to be lens softness are resolved with proper lighting and a steady camera.

I know that the DA 18-55mm Kit lens is not a Macro lens, but I'm quite impressed in the images it takes on my K-x

Unfortunately, Flickr strips the EXIF out when it resizes your pictures, but if you visit your own Flickr page and click on that photo, the EXIF info is available as "More Properties".

Looks to me to be toward the wide end of that, considering it's obviously cropped. Nice shot!
thanks for your comment. It is indeed 24mm. I tend to go just off the wide end lately.
