Just to clarify, I completely agree with you regarding the Limited lenses and I have no intention or desire to carry any monster like the new 50mm all day long, however good it is reported to be. However, they cover a fairly close range, so if the reach of a 300mm is required, it is going to be much bigger and heavier than the Limiteds. in the post above, I was commenting about the PLM version of the 55-300, which is relatively compact, and in which the focus motor adds little to the mass compared with other available 300mm lenses and yet adds greatly to the usability and the potential for successful shots.

You're absolutely correct. I was referring to the up-market lenses such as the DA* series zooms for APS-C or the HD DA 70-200 and similar full frame models, all of which may be brilliant lenses but the weight is a killer, especially when you're 76 and, with any amount of luck, counting.

Reasonable zoom lens weights seem to stop with the DA18-55, DA 50-200 and DA55-300 series screw drive lenses, even the DA*200 and DA*300 prime lenses are noticeably heavy, of course not all of their weight is caused by the motor drive, part of their weight is attributable to the weight of the glass elements necessary for their (relatively) fast apertures.

(Partial cross post from "Macro by any means necessary" and the "Show me your insects")

Woke up to a bit of snow on the ground yesterday morning. It melted away by afternoon, but it's a good sign that 2018's Outdoor Insect Season is about done. But Indoor Insect Season continues. Like last year, our front hallway is host to a bunch of a tiny, mysterious insect. Other bugs show seasonality, so why not this one, too? So once again I'm left pondering why they show up at this time of year, what are they eating, what else, if anything, do they grow into? Identification would be greatly appreciated!

Being the only show in town, the most accessible of the half dozen of them that have hatched, arrived, or whatever, got a lot of attention this afternoon from me and my K-S2. I used a combination of Kinotel 8mm movie camera lens reversed on extension and reversed 18-55 II, with and without extension. THese are the kit lens shots only. All handheld, with Pringles tin extender/diffuser on the built in flash. All images uncropped unless otherwise indicated.

Reversed 18-55 II

100% crop of the above:

Reversed 18-55 II on extension:

I look forward to seeing what these combinations will produce once I get my KP.

Here are some context shots with a ruler in centimetres for scale (DA 18-50 DC WR RE):

Two for the price of one!

100% crop of the above. Not bad for a kit lens!

Got to use the WR capabilities of the K-50 + DAL 18-55... forcing it to shoot wide open (either AV or TV with a qucik shutter) gives some good results every now and again.

When the photography gods are kind to you on the 1st of January you know it's going to be a good year. Either that or they are just playing with you and there's 364 days of bad light coming up. (18-55mm WR)

Let's hope the Gods of Good Light smile upon you this year! Nice one, Dave.

K-70 + da 50-200 ed

First image taken recently with new K-70 and the DA 50-200

I photographed this landscape from the roof of a multi storey car park in Bury St Edmunds, UK. The white office block is about 200 metres away, the church spire 400 metre and the sugar beet factory chimney approx 800 metres away.
