Using the K-3 and A-400 FA 1.7 TC to reach almost 700mm, (1000 mm equivalent) it's hard to get anything at all unless it's perfect light (maximum aperture is ƒ9.5). This was not perfect light, and the lack of sharpness had me wondering. This is the first time we've had Redpolls at the feeder this year. It's good to see them back.

Then of course you get the one that shows you what you could have had, if everything else had worked out. Working with 680mm is definitely a challenge.

I nominate Adam to gift you the FA 600 for being the first poster on page 1000 and the owls. Let us know if it happens.

Better than I did this year. ;~)

Hey look--we're on page 1,000!

Here's one I brought back from Cancun EXIF says "250mm" but I was shooting with the Sigma 100-300 & 1.4x so really 350mm:

Page 1000, and not a bogus thread like that other thread, a bonafide thread.

Agreed - I stopped with the DA*300 - haven't even gone as far as the 1.4x TC.

To me beyond that point is quite a trade off - loosing 1 stop for 120mm more focal length. In my eyes there isn't a whole lot of difference from 300mm to 420mm. So at that point I embrace the challenge to get closer which is a huge challenge around here as my wildlife is truly wild and so very skittish.
But but but... to use digital TV parlance, the 1.4 TC (I presume it's really 1.414...) gives twice the pixels for every object photographed! Twice as many 'extra' as the K-3 does compared to the K-5/II/s! So 3 times more pixels and 1.7 times linear, by going from K-5/II/s to K-3 and the TC 1.4.

Well that's how I finally persuaded myself to get one, anyway! Trouble is, the K-3 part wasn't free... and neither was tha DA*300mm...

The shots from this day have made me appreciate how quiet Pentax's shutter is. The guy next to me shooting Canon sounded like a shotgun going off over and over. Yet he somehow felt the need to shush my partner and I when we were whispering to each other
What a beautiful photo! The Canon guy sounds really unreasonable.
