lukulele,

That wire is not live. It is actually a lightning rod that protects the live wires hanging below. It helps keeps surges from getting into the grid. East of where I live in western NY is a place called The Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. Just south of it is a power line with similar towers. There are Osprey nests on top of a lot of the supports.

Right but, still, building a nest on a lightening rod still seems somewhat...oh I don't know... "sub-optimal"?

If it is tall, and it is near water, Osprey will build. This is a high voltage tower = note the top of the insulator. They lived here in their summer cottage for years, but a severe summer thunderstorm took the nest down two years ago, and they relocated (not far away).

Thanks for the info gaweidert and Albert. Actually I wondered about the cross beam as too narrow a support? I'll check tomorrow to see if the Osprey engineering has progressed. Thanks again for the heads up.

I hope this doesn't get flagged for inappropriate. If so, I apologize in advance.

Pigeons mate for life. This pair happened to land next to me on the pier.

One of them put it's beak inside of the others and they started moving their heads in a figure-8 simultaneously. I believe the correct term is called "billing".

Next....

Afterwards, they didn't speak to each other for a few minutes.

Then, the male went up and gave the female a hug and started grooming her.

Sometimes 500mm isn't enough - this one has been cropped to only a third of original size!
