White-necked Jacobin (DA* 300mm + 1.4x TC), plus 2 shots of Copper-rumped Hummingbird (DA* 300mm without T/C). The first is with pop-up flash, the second without. I see flash shots of hummingbirds like this in calendars etc. but I think I prefer non-flash - more like what I actually saw. Also I don't like doing a lot of processing on the eyes.

1st and 3rd are excellent. The 2nd one looks really reflective.

I didn't think of this. When I checked, the options on my K-r other than "flash" are "auto white balance" and "unchanged". Which would you have chosen, and do you think it would have made a big difference? Looking at your wonderful shots, I didn't think you were using flash but I may be wrong.
I use flash all the time , Use unchanged that way it stays on the white balance you have selected, have you tried changing the white balance on those shots before you convert them to jpegs?

I shoot jpeg which works most of the time. A lesson learned for next time - thanks.

Why is it that wildlife never chooses to be photographed on a fence post with such character, they seem to always like new post

Every time I go to this sight I have my fingers crossed but nothing
Taken with the K20d and sigma 300 F/2.8

Now back to some wildlife

I see 2

I thought some more about this. Some of the other raised the matter of white balance of the flash. The effect does not look like that to me. I suspect it may be more to do with the physical mechanism of the reflection from the feathers. If the source of the colour is a chemical that has a particular spectral reflection characteristic then the colour balance argument would hold. If the reflection colour is the result of reflection between surfaces, a bit like the rainbow you get in oil slicks, then this colour effect would have to do with getting reflection from parts of the feathers that you do not get reflection from when under available light.

You may be able to test the theory by trying to adjust the colours of the flash version using the PP colour balance settings.

Thanks - it's true that hummingbird colours come from refraction rather than pigmentation. Sometimes incredibly vibrant colours can flash on and off with a slight turn of the head. With flash (especially direct), I guess you are just getting a full-on light source that reflects right back at the camera. I tried adjusting the colour settings on Photoshop Elements but it didn't do much. Not to worry - I'm very happy overall with the pics I brought back from that trip, including some already posted here.

I went back for a few more Boreal Chickadee images today... I confess, I used the F 70-210. So shoot me.

Full frame for me today......I tried out an old K1000 with some Kodak Ultramax 400 film (and the F*300 4.5, of course)....or is it F*200?

I recently bought the K1000 (had a K85 1.8 attached).
