Looking for them Pentax colors

(apologies for assaulting your senses)

Has anyone seen an improvement in colors using the new Pentax 1.4x AW with say Sigma or Tamron zooms (like the 70-200mm f2.8, 100-300, or the 300, 500mm primes)??? I like the Ex line in terms of sharpness but when it comes to IQ its colors look regurgitated. The new Art series has improved on this front tremendously, but they're not even close to those dulcimer Pentax tones....

Not the Sigma you're looking for, but my girlfriend has the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG. I have the 1.4x AW. I've never put the 2 together, but can do some test shots to see.

Just a warning, the Sigma 70-300 may extend back into the glass on the 1.4 TC. My recollection is I was just real happy my TC wasn't scratched after I tried that combination. There is also a warning from Sigma not to try and use that lens with one of their TCs.

I recently received the Sigma 150-500 and finally had the opportunity to play around with it this weekend.

Great tit (Parus major)

Sorry, Stavri. Can't do any tests.

Thanks for the warning. Does it hit the TC when zooming in and out, or when focusing?

I don't know, I just remember I knew about the warning from Sigma, and as soon as the lens jammed, I took it off. I don't even remember whether is was during zooming, or focusing. It was right after I bought the TC, which was right after it was released, so a while ago.

The Sigma TC has an element that extends into the lens. It can only be used with lenses that have a recessed rear element. I don't think this is the case with the Pentax TC.

Picked up a Tamron-f 2x TC cheaply so was interested to see how it might work on the 31A. M42 fit, so the inconvenience of switching mounts and fitting an M42 adapter as well.

The moorhen came out ok. And the canada goose.

Crop shows the softening and increased aberrations of the full sized image.

My inclination these days is to avoid the use of a tc, mainly because I don't think the 31A is a particularly good lens to use with them due to its f5.6 max aperture and its proneness to purple fringing and coma. But this one seemed to be doing quite well. However the snipe came out better without tc (pics resized to 800px).

With tc

However when the red breasted mergansers got into a wee fracas with the great crested grebes in the middle of the lagoon it was because I had the tc on that I was able to get these pics.
Attack!

"That showed em!" "Right on bro'"

"Just ignore them" " I quite agree"
