F*300...first attempt shooting birds at home. Shot through open window. I think I want to invest in the Pentax HD 1.4 TC.

Nope......not even close

I would have been very close to needing new shorts.

This one spiky enough? You don't want to get them upset! (previously posted)
Getting spiked by a porcupine appears to be a much worse experience than an Echidna, but the Echidna definitely is spikier. Unfortunately I don't have a decent photo of my own online. I once relocated one off a freeway; luckily I had a picnic blanket handy, but unfortunately I didn't get a good photo at the time.

First shots with the 150-500 and K-3. Not bad considering the light and dirty window they were taken through...

500mm

370mm and cropped to 14MP

Shutter was 1/125 and I had both SR and OS on. Always forget the SR...
Looks like that K-3 makes the 150-500 a workable deal. Very nice.

Is the F*300 a manual lens? Would a manual TC be better? To me, the big thing about the HD DA 1.4 TC is passing through all the control of a DA AF lens.

Finding a Powerful Owl is such a rare thing, I'm so glad I had the HD DA TC to get this shot, although I had to crank the camera up to 1600 ISO to keep the shutter speed where I could take the photo hand held.

All of the F series lenses are AF. They simply preceded the FA series from ~1987 to ~1992.

Thanks, I should have checked. I'd be curious to know how well the F*300 works with the HD DA 1.4x TC. I have the impression it is optimised for the DA lenses.

F*300 4.5 with HD 1.4x TC

I've been shooting for a couple of months now with the F*300, often with the 1.4 TC attached. I'm enjoying the beautiful bokeh of this lens, as well as the extra reach with the TC. I find that the combination works very well together, as long as the light is decent. I love the compactness of this combination! Easy to carry and doesn't require a heavy tripod. I don't often shoot handheld with this combo, preferring all the sharpness I can get, but it certainly is very doable weight-and-size-wise. Here are a couple of shots taken on a recent birding outing (the first is of a Virginia Rail who just peeked out of the rushes in the marsh. I felt lucky to get the shot):

The trouble with those F series lenses, is there just aren't enough of them. Trying to fond one is tough.
