Here are the first bird shots I have taken with my K3. All photos were taken with a Tokina 400mm ATX AF. Nothing too special all I could find were some Robins wandering about. Hopefully the robins are sign of warmer weather and some more interesting subjects.

Great action shot with the Robin heaving at the worm - obviously it isn't giving up without a fight!

Thankyou, burst mode can work wonders. I am still used to film days when you could not just shoot a bunch of frames. In the end he did get the worm.

Outstanding shot of the Robin catching the worm. The earliest bird no doubt .

Great photos. I especially like the struggle that appears to be going on with the robin and the worm.

Thank you freespirit and rockstar, I struggled with lens at first. I could not get the focus right. I did some shots in manual focus and they were fine so I made a minor calibration adjustment. I also have found I need to offset the focus point a little when in spot mode. Also there is a big difference shooting 400mm than 50mm.

Scorpio; great photos with your Tokina 400mm ATX AF! I also love the one of the Robin pulling the worm out of the ground! All are really nice!

Here's some of mine from this morning with the same lens; I'm really loving this Tokina!

First is a male Red Crossbill.
2nd Female Red Crossbill
last 2, male Cassin's Finch

A day or two ago towards dark I caught site of a fox in the yard. Today having tea looking out the window I saw him jump out and try for a squirrel. (Sorry Otis). SO two different times, of day, anyone have any ideas about how to go about getting some better images? This one taken through the window, hand held, nice snapshot... but not really photography.

K-3 plus DA*60-250 and HD DA 1.4 TC.

Beautiful fox! When a fox gets used to seeing you around, then you can get better photos; until then they are pretty skittish. Years ago, I was very fortunate to find a den with several young ones not far from my house. It took a week of me walking up there & standing around before the parent would quit sounding the alarm for the youngsters to run into the den. Got some great photos of them.

Here's one more with the Tokina 400.

A cute little Redbreasted Nuthatch.

K3 + DA*300

They never showed any signs that they could hear the camera shutter. It wasn't until I took a step out from the trees that I was hiding behind that they spotted me.

It depends how cold you want to be in the snow Norm. I had a fox that routinely went through my backyard a year ago when we were moving. I used a blind, a pop up tent with an opening for a lens, set up the tripod rig, and sat and sat and sat on a stool in a cramped blind.. The fox did come through and I caught a picture - focus in the woods was a problem. So I tried again with manual focus on a spot along the path. The fox came through again but a slightly different path. Then I had to put the camera away and pack for our move. I think a blind using manual focus on a spot wold have worked in my wooded yard. It was very tedious sitting on a stool. If I do it again I would use a remote control release and get more comfortable with a view of the trail/spot. The fox in my yard had fairly predictable routine in terms of path but not at predictable times.
