We have nuthatches here, too. Lovely little birds. Unfortunately for me, a K10D's focusing cannot get focus before they are 10 feet (3 metres) from where I was pointing the camera. K-3 soon ...

I don't quite follow what you mean. This was taken with my K10D and the Tokina 400 lens, handheld.

And now, for a slight change of pace - found this little guy in my backyard...taken with my K3 and Tamron 70-300mm macro lens at 300mm in the macro 'setting'.
