One.

Two.

Three.

We were walking up a mountain road, there was a yellow flower up the bank. I set the tripod with camera on a flat spot, took my second body and was looking for the easiest access to where the flower was. A commotion started behind me, and here were three cubs up three trees staring at me. I took a few quick shots of each one, bundled up my gear and started backing away. Didn't see the mom.

500mm is too long sometimes.

Still the same six that hatched in the back woods a few years ago as far as I can tell.

Actually, the A-400 and 1.4 give me 560mm, I prefer a little more context for my images, These look good on the forum, but they aren't something I'd print. The birds are about 20x life size. Mine aren't better, just, I was closer. I took the 1.4 off for the purple finches, but they never came back after I did. I think this is why people like zooms.

That was a close encounter of the third kind. Good for you it wasn't the fourth.

What is the bird in the second picture?
I just saw one today and would like to add it to my list.

Eastern Wood-Pewee.

But it can be confused with the Empidonax flycatchers. The Pewee has no eye ring and longer wings. They can also be confused with the Eastern Phoebe. The Pewee is less brown and has stronger wingbars than the Phoebe. The Phoebe also has an all dark bill. The Pewee bill is dark above and yellow underneath.

You would be at the very northern most part of its summer range.
