Finally getting the ambition to take some pics -

A new one for us - after looking it up we think it is a Brown Thrasher. He acted a lot like a Towhee scratching in the leaves along the boarder of the woods:

And a little Rose-breasted Grosbeak fun:

A Brown Thrasher indeed.

QuoteQuote:
Brown Thrashers spend most of their time near or on the ground, walking, running, or hopping. When disturbed at the nest, they drop to the ground and dart into dense cover. They feed by sweeping their long bills through leaf litter to uncover insects and other invertebrates. They are slow, short-distance fliers with a distinctive jerky, fluttering flight style. Brown Thrashers are monogamous during a breeding season, but it isn’t known whether pairs stay together from year to year. They breed in such dense vegetation that little is known of their courtship; the few observations that exist suggest that a courting pair presents each other with twigs or dead leaves, after which the male may briefly chase the female before mating. They defend territories of variable size, and they are very aggressive toward intruding Brown Thrashers and toward potential nest predators, which include snakes (racers as well as garter, king, rat, bull, and milk snakes) and dogs. Sometimes Brown Thrashers strike predators with their bills hard enough to draw blood.

For some reason I've been cursed with wildlife showing up unexpectedly far too close for them to fit into the 500mm field of view. This is a grouse, possibly a Dusky female. I saw a male just previous to this; I was walking, came over a rise and he was there 10 feet away. We stared at each other for a few seconds, I moved to lift the camera and he flew off.

Here a bit further away but partially hidden.

Here are a couple of recent shots taken with mt K-5/Sigma 500mm f4.5 EX DG/Kirk window mount

Also I have just got this .I'm going to use it mostly with my Sigma 300mm f2.8 EX DG for foxes, birds in flight and aircraft. I have fitted an Arca Swiss clamp now I just need to wire up the trigger somehow.

F*300...switched to manual mode. In Av the highlights were overblown. Much better now. Those goldfinches can be mean little bastards

I sent my Sigma 300-800mm in for a firmware upgrade a month and a half ago and Sigma decided to give it a complete overhaul including a new focus motor at no cost to me.
They tell me its a BNIB inside, and I should get it back by Thursday.
A few from today.

You just need to buy a Chinese (C$2.57 including shipping last year) remote and wire it to the trigger. I bought one and it is still working fine. Even if you botch the work, it wouldn't be much of a loss.

We were walking up a mountain road, there was a yellow flower up the bank. I set the tripod with camera on a flat spot, took my second body and was looking for the easiest access to where the flower was. A commotion started behind me, and here were three cubs up three trees staring at me. I took a few quick shots of each one, bundled up my gear and started backing away. Didn't see the mom.
Great shots! I'd have been really worried about not knowing where the mother was.
