Lovely. I've never been able to get that close.

I happened to be subbing for one of our elementary teachers today and raised the blinds to see this out on the tennis courts. Ironically, this played out while teaching the food chain. During class the male was nearby on another light tower and disappeared. About ten minutes later he returned to a parking lot light even closer to the classroom and proceeded to fling feathers off a victim as fast as its beak could pick them. The fifth graders went crazy photographing the "occasion" with their tablets. The male and plucked carcass went quickly to the chick above in the adjacent tower. These images are from after school today. Pretty amazing to have an entire class witness it.

Sometimes (albeit rarely) things just happen like they should. ;~)

I think this is a Gray Catbird. Can anyone confirm? This was my first time actually seeing this one.

Thanks. In the new field guide that I have, as well as google images, the pictures they show aren't all fluffed up and the birds look smaller than the one in my picture.

Yeah, they are typically svelte: this one just had the urge to go all puffy when you shot. I kinda like when birds do that--gives me a lot of crunchy detail to work with.
