A couple grackles disputing who is the toughest bird on the railing. I'll just observe that nominally this thread started as "discuss your long lenses" but has become "post your long lens images." That's just fine, no objection.

There aren't too many lenses after 300mm that are frequently used, so all of the discussions happened during the 1st 100 pages. You're still welcomed to discuss long lenses though.

I discuss lots of images, just no one ever discusses back.
It's not my fault.

There was some sun today, and i felt like getting out, in the winter, you take sunny days when you can, even if it's -14)C. At least out in the blind, I can come in when I'm cold. Todays sightings....
See I tried to start a discussion on shooting in -14ºC, but no, no one wants to talk about that.

We could have talked about what were the best gloves, whether or not those foot inserts in your boot work, how to get frost off your viewfinder when you accidentally breath on it.. There were a hundred ways it could have gone, but all we get is "duh.. duh...duh.."

Sorry, Norm, I have no experience in shooting at -14C.
Not only that, I have no intention of gaining that experience.
End of discussion?

Well, I need to know because it gets cold on my local forays around Toronto and we're headed up to Algonquin again next month to do some snowshoeing and photography. I suppose I should minimize the heating in the car but I doubt I'll get spousal support for that.

See? That's what I'm taking about.

No desire to learn.

Let us know what you're up too. Maybe we can meet for coffee or something.

We can set you up so good, you'll start taking clothing off, (and then put it on again real quick when you realize what you're doing).

I was thinking about going to the zoo tomorrow morning, but the high for the day is going to be -5C. And since I'm going to the zoo Saturday when the high is going to be -6C I think I'll skip it.

But you have plenty of opportunities to get scintillation.

BTW: Anyone know how to descintillate an image degraded by scintillation?

Thanks Tim. Next time I'm out in the frost, I'll try and remember that.

The coldest I have ever been in was maybe 28 Fahrenheit (-2C). I don't even want to know how -14C (7F) would feel. I've only experienced snow a couple times and have no want to experience it again. I prefer hot, and if ever you want to talk about ways to keep your camera from showing the overheating indicator in 110F (43C), I will gladly speak up. I dislike the winter, and I hate being cold. I prefer to wear less clothing rather than wearing it in layers. It's 42F (5C) here right now, and the temp in my house is 71F (21C). I am wearing a jacket and am still cold. My comfort zone is 90F+ (32C) for outdoor weather.

I don't much like the cold, less so as I get older, but generally I can manage to stay warm even when the temps are sub-zero such Christmas 1980 when the high temp here was one below (exceptionally cold for this region of MessyChewBits). The real problem I have with cold, and had even when I was a kid, are the sinuses areas near my eyes which feel the cold more than any other part of my body including hands and feet. It's very difficult to keep that skin covered and warm. Last winter, when we had many days in the low teens and single digits, I took to a Polartech ski mask and some cheap ski goggles. They are WONDERFUL.
A northern shoveler who at the time was, like me, in Florida during the winter.
