American (Pine) Marten - DA*300 with 1.4x TC. Although it was wonderful to have such a close encounter with this creature in the wild all of my shots of were softer than expected (hand-held at 1/640). No problem for later shots with the same lens combination and speed. These were processed minimally in Photoshop Elements from JPEGs (lighting and autosharpen) - perhaps there are further improvements I could do in RAW?

That works.
Nice shot for sure! Not a real popular fowl with Otis, but it is a quality shot, he acknowledges.

What a cute little guy he is...shots are plenty good for my eyes....I'd rather see him not just perfect than not see him at all!

Here is one of Otis' offspring....he's a happy faced little guy! Should be, life is good here for the squirrels!

Regards!

Congrats on the encounter! I suspect they could be improved somewhat but that's hardly my area of expertise. What aperture?

Thanks - it's several years since I saw a marten and I want to make the most of these opportunities! Wide open at f5.6, ISO 800. I have had good results before at 5.6.

Yeah, I think it might have been sharper and less "glow-y" if you had stopped down a bit.

I'm sorry to have to say this but one of the main prey items for Pine Martens is... Red Squirrels.

I got the long glass, just been waiting for the K1 part. Of course it won't be as long with the K-1. above all else we know Pentax knows how to make long glass and the arrival of the k1 is just
a signal that some of the classic long glass is needed again.

One of the most delightful (but really rare masterpieces of long glass in the Pentax-A 400 f/2.8. It's only about 13 inches long but is a master piece. with a 1.4x TC is comes out as a 560mm f4 or if you slam a 2x
converter on it..... 800mm... and still good speed. Just one of those under appreciated lenses Add auto focus to it, and it's killer. the extra focal length makes a based for the TC to get out there, and the speed
means you can hang a TC on there and still expect the Auto focus to work. and it's small enough to fit in your airplane carry on luggage.

I have been sitting in my car in the garden trying to catch Lesser Redpolls that are coming to the feeders. They are very very small and don't stay still for long ,so all in all a bit of a nightmare. K-5/Sigma 300mm f2.8 EX DG

Plenty of Goldfinches which sit and pose

You have to be dedicated to wait on red-polls with those beautiful finches trying to distract you!

Those Redpolls are just fine Gary - Goldfinches are pretty but Redpolls have their own charms and are more elusive.

These pics are from an area of Algonquin Park where Norm and I have been tracking down foxes this week. K3 and DA* 300mm.
