Looks very good to me. You either can edit background in photoshop, or fry to shoot using water as a background, or open space. Also shooting from lower position often helps.

Instead of TC I bought a toy today- Spiratone 400mm f6.3 long lens on ebay, cheap, but in absolutely mint condition. I worry a bit about the condition, it may mean that lens has some issues. Hopefully it's not the case. Must be fun to play with.

I use manual focus. The only shots at 680mm I have taken were with my K10, and it wouldn't even think about AF at f/9.5. I haven't been out with the K3 and combination, but I suspect it won't care for it either. I learned to MF back in the 1960's on an original Pentax. It doesn't bother me much. I chimped on the K10 for the first shot or two to ensure I was looking at the right thing, but when pushed I just shoot and save.

I caught this Corn Bunting from the drivers seat of a car with my K-5/FA*600mmf4ED[IF] on a kirk window mount, quite tricky holding the camera/lens one handed up a ridgeway track. I get as close as I think I can and then kill the engine and coast to a stop.

I'm an opportunist. If the opportunity is there, I shoot. Bushes, trees, wetlands, ditches, rooftops, etc. Even if you don't like the photos, it's still practice for next time. A good photo of a bird in a weird location is still a good photo.
Point taken!

Thanks for the feedback...yeah I'll have to get out to some other locations such as you mentioned, hey its Florida so its not like we don't have plenty of variety right Oh and I see what you mean with lower position shooting as demonstrated by weevil's photos, but in my case that would have been a no go since those sandhill cranes were over a meter tall so that vegetation wouldn't have allowed for it...anyways live and learn.

Wow! I think that is appropriate for those shots!

I should be ashamed to post my only shot of the day...but of course, like Otis.....I'm not. Sure would like to get something spectacular like those though!

Regards!

One of my favorite birding places is a lake behind chain store with garbage containers. It's just great because that place attracts so many birds, and I have an access there at any time since parks open too late to get the best morning light. And it's about 3 min from my house by car.

Check your local areas, little lakes, you will be surprised!

One more thing, check local bird watchers online resources, you can get ideas about locations. Also check burrowing owls in your area, they are incredible!

I have sort of operated on the assumption that f/5.6 glass was needed to get AF to work, though sometimes you can get a little more.

This implies that if you are using an f/5.6 lens to start with getting af to work with a TC is doubtful, though on some subject matters it will. A 1.4 TC eats about 1 f stop of speed

IT's the reason I spent some serious dollars to buy an FA 300 f/2.8 lens. --- I can put the HD TC on it and the resullts are happy as you can see of the photos of thet Sealions a couple pages back.

of course the lens that I have that has 'put lots of TC's on me' is manual focus to start wtih--- than is the Pentax-A 400mm f/2.8. It's useful ness is not so much taking photos in really low light where you need the f/2.8, It's usefull
ness is to jam a 2x-L TC on it and it puts you out there at an effective 800mm at less than f/8 or if you get desperate you can stack the TC's and lurch out to the 1100-1200mm range. places you can't go

http://www.vannattabros.com/12-05/a400-217.jpg

This photo was taken with a 2x-L converter stacked with the 1.7x adapter of pentaxes' which I think given an effective 1360mm focal length.

There are several good small relatively fast apo refractor telescopes and spotting scopes that can be coupled to a DSLR. I have gotten great results with this technique.

I miss getting out with the 400. It's so compact, perfect for handheld shots when the eagles are zipping by overhead

Great shot
