After four unsuccessful attempts we finally tracked down the Harlequin Duck at a waterfront park today. It's a Western bird and doesn't show up here very often.
Harlequin ducks also go at least as far East of you as Iceland. We saw a fair number there. They seem to like somewhat turbulent water and tended to be a little far away from shore.

I've previously seen them in Alberta and on the Inside Passage, British Columbia. There are some Harlequins breeding in Labrador as well but they are rare around the Great Lakes.

They get them in the Niagara gorge. But they are mainly a sea duck in winter. We had one last winter in Oswego harbor, and the year before that too, but none this year.

We have them breeding in the fast moving mountain streams in BC. A real treat to see.

There is a big gap in the breeding range between the Western Cordillera population and the eastern population in Baffin Island/Labrador/Quebec/Iceland. His Ontario bird could be from the eastern population.

The others are Long-tailed Duck, Red-necked Grebe and Greater Scaup (hard to tell from Lesser but I think that's right)
The black "nail" on the tip of the bill looks a bit small for a Greater Scaup.

Your bird is more likely to be from the eastern breeding population (Baffin Island, Labrador, Quebec).

I thought the "nail" was a good match for the one shown for the Greater Scaup in the Sibley Guide.

This is a Yellowhammer on the edge of a puddle unfortunately there was a stone near the surface of the puddle where the bird decided to go for a drink so It's kinda messed up the reflection.

It is hard to tell from that angle.

I haven't been here for a while, I've been shooting with shorter lenses. I don't mind sneaking with the 60-250, but the 70-210 and Tamron 90 are a bit short.

Today with the K-3 Sigma, 70-300 @300mm. I was close enough to be in macro range for many images, and I had lots of misses due to too narrow DoF.

1000 ISO ƒ7.1, AV
