Yes, that's what surprised me. I was looking for a flash extender (such as Better Beamer), so I went to the local Canon and Nikon shops in town and they did not have it, even the Canon sales guys did not know what a flash extender was. So I showed them what it was from browsing the web, then they said "never use this, you'll scare the birds and they'll all fly away". But, I remembered having seen a video from Moose Peterson (B&H videos) who was saying that birds don't care about the flash light. So, I ordered a Better-Beamer off the web, and I tried it... amazing the birds did not move, although some of the birds had a small reaction (noticed the flash) but did not seem to understand what happened! So my conclusion was that the guys from Canon shop were not so knowledgeable about bird photography.
Sorry about the late response and I know there's some debate over this, but I'm concerned that nocturnal birds such as owls and nightjars, with eyes designed for night time seeing, can be adversely affected by flash photography. For myself I don't use flash on these birds.

band-tailed pigeon

A first for me is to catch up with some band-tailed pigeons who dropped by for a visit.

I have never identified them before, though they have been in the area.

this seems to be a west coast and into south American thing. it was real spooky so through the patio door it was with smc PENTAX-FA 80-320mm F4.5-5.6 @5.6&320mm
This isn't my favorite bird lens but was on a K-3 nearby when the opportunity arose and when a bird you have never seen before stops by so show off it's feathers a camera
within reach is better than no camera.

The novoflex follow focus suggests some possibilities for BIF, so I had a wee go panning the sand martins. But I think with these fast moving birds I was trying to run before I could walk.

You can see they are birds, even that they are sand martins just about, so that's a start.. innit?

More static subjects:

Didn't quite get the bullfinch as sharp but I liked the colour.

Those are lovely Bryce. I'm beginning to see them around here setting up nests.

This Whinchat landed on the end of a fallen dead tree that I was standing next to. I have never seen one before.
As always excellent shots Gary. I always love your backgrounds.

Just a little sparrow out on the railing trying to pick up his lunch. K50 and HD 55-300 @ 300mm.

Someone found a wounded Red tail hawk this AM.
Looks like he had a broken wing... was staying on the ground.
We called the fauna agents...
Hope they manage to capture it and bring it to the recovery facilities!

I certainly can't compete with the baby sparrow, but the doves finally decided that I could open the back door and stick the camera out . they ahve been around for a couple of weeks now, a bird I"ve never seen here before---at least close enough to identify. the first photo is a dove playing dead which is one of their distractions. Shortly after the photo was taken, he jumped up and went back to eating.

I got an astonishing improvement in sharpness when I could get the glass door open for the last 3 dove photos. These are of a sharpness that I'm proud of. I still pushed things a bit, but not so much.
These are taken with the Pentax-A 400mm + the pentax 1.7x Adapter as they called for effective 680mm --- also I had good light so got f/13 at 1/125 at ISO 3200 This gave me some depth of field
which reallly helped. The birds were at the same distance that I had been using the 2x-L converter so I ultimately cropped them a little more, but the good news was that the sharpness was there to make that possible.

Sharing the Buffy Fish Owls taken on yesterday. The first known nesting record since 2011. The chick fully fledged in the end of April.

The mummy, keeping a watchful eye on the young...

The juvenile..

Terrific shots Gary. Between you, Travis and Ken it will be hard to hide our more pedestrian posts.
