I know the F*300 takes sharper pictures than that at F4.5. Not sure what happened but something is not right.

can't disagree with you, but it's not a lens that I have a lot of experience with. but these were taken through a double glass door and cropped by about half al of which doesn't help, but the pigeons are so spooky
that otherwise getting anywhere near them isn't functional at the moment. I"m hopful that they will calm down over the summer if they hang around for the summer. When they first appeared you couldn't even
move you hand inside the house or they would take off. They always station a watch bird, before any come in to feed. I'm going to work on tethering using the new K-1 and when I get that figured out
, it should be possible to get a bit closer.

Superb shots !
I find that my K5 performs better (with DA*300/4) for birding vs. my K3 ... but you prove otherwise.
This Sigma 500 sure rocks!
Cheers!

Canada Geese - K3, DA 55-300 hand held @ 300

I took these two shots during a walk a week ago. I crossed the Elk River walking bridge, tramped up to where Michel Creek flows into the Elk River. The geese were at the nest site on the far side of the creek when I arrived and I took many photos before they took the chicks for a swim. On land, the image is cropped to 3010 x 2002 from the K3's 6016x. 50%. The on water pic is cropped to 1422x945. I had to relocate to the river edge to see them swimming, and they were quite far away.

I'll go back with the 400 and my new Gimbal Head and see if I can do a bit better with more reach. I'll put my AFA 1.7x in my pocket while I'm at it.

Thank you. I did use a Better Beamer, that helps.

I posted these in Post Your Photos. We'll see which gets more views...

A short morning visit to Great Bear Recreation Area. I wasn't able to get out as early as I wanted to, so only spent less than 2 hours walking around.

Eastern Phoebe

Golden-winged x Blue-winged (Lawrence's) Warbler

Female Yellow Warbler

As I was standing on the trail at the boundary between the shrub habitat and the deep woods habitat, this Ovenbird landed in a tree right next to me. Not more than 10-15 feet away. Got exactly 2 shots before it was gone.

Cooper's Hawk with its breakfast. Can't tell what the prey is. Hopefully a Gray Catbird...

Chipping Sparrow

Ruby-crowned Kinglet

Chestnut-sided Warbler

A skipper butterfly. I'm thinking Horace's Duskywing.

Eastern Phoebe on the way out.

Nice shots. How come you don't like catbirds?

Nice morning's work! Warblers and kinglets are especially challenging to capture because they are so active. It's fortunate to get the chance to photograph a 'Lawrence's' Warbler.

I think the raptor might be a Broad-winged Hawk (adult). I base this on the darkness and thickness of the bars on the belly and the breast, the contrast between the light and dark bars on the tail, the width of the light bars on the tail, the length of the tail relative to the torso, and the length of the wings relative to the torso. I can't help you with the identification of the prey, however. Broad-wings do catch birds from time to time.
