Yep, I do the same if light is low, but generally it's hand held.

I appreciate the feedback, I also have been eyeballing the 150-450 very closely, a lot of money when I already have the Sigma 150-500 and the DA*300 w/HD 1.4 TC Yada yada yada maybe Sigma will come out with a Pentax mount on the 150-600 Sports lens ??? Sigma ??

I appreciate the feedback but I am worried about the CA & purple fringing it has been reported as troublesome.
I had a copy of the A*600 f5.6 for a while but didn't get to use it much because it was rather heavy. A tripod is definitely required. Also, the tripod foot is located too far back so the lens is not balanced. You will need to get a long mounting plate to move the centre of gravity forward to balance the lens. CA could be bad with this lens; at least for the copy I have. I also found it difficult to get sharp pictures but it may just be my technique. $1800 is a decent price but the condition of the lens is a big factor.

She Who Must Be Obeyed put the kibosh on any further upgrades to the photo equipment for a while. Little details like worn out tires on the truck .... but this is very, very, very tempting. It cost me C$300 to have the M 400 repaired when I broke it. I am finding the green button to be problematic with the M and 1.7x combo. It overexposes by roughly 2 stops, which I can handle, but not consistently, which I cannot. I'm still trying to figure it out. A series would meter correctly, I'm assuming. (I know, "makes an Ass out of You And Me")
Hmm, I've never tried allowing the camera to meter with my A400. I shoot my K-5 II + A400 combo exclusively in M mode. I grew accustomed to operating that way with my Tak teles and never felt the need to change.

Anyway, it looks like the A400 I linked to has been sold... I hope a PF member got it!

I always wonder if karma is real, and if it is, what the consequences will be for trading a treasure like that for money. Everyone wants to think about what they can sell it for, no one wants to think about what it would cost to replace.
Those were my thoughts too Norm....sad to see an old guy like that murdered for cash.

It's not all birds and squirrels here...I've got raccoons too!

more wetfeathers...

More shots of rainy day birds. The pied-billed grebe was shot during a sleet-storm. They are endangered here in NJ, yet over the course of one week I saw three individuals. This one was actually the closest I got (it's a heavy crop) - I stayed in the car.

K-5 II + A400/5.6.

rock dove

catbird (slight crop)

sparrow - it really was this dark

pied-billed grebe (heavy crop)

K1 + DA*300 @cropped mode 6.5fps

The results is actually not bad shooting at cropped mode for higher fps but only 15MP, similar to K5-IIS, at least I'm able to capture this shot
