Walked outside with the dog last night and the full moon was just coming up - a giant golden ball! Had to try to get a photo. Taken with my K-3, Sigma 150-500mm at 500mm with the Pentax AF 1.7 TC in manual mode - if I remember correctly it was 1/125 at f9.5, ISO 800 - on a tripod - manual focus.
Well done, Chip

Hi took this today on a Powerful Owl (a first) on my new Sigma 150-500.

ISO 6400 F6.3 1/25 sec hand held lens OS off camera SR on. It was late in the afternoon.

You advice / opinions on how I have used the lens sought. Kind regards.
I love owls too! ...and I love my Bigma 50-500. I have hundreds of shots handheld at 1/125 or lower with plenty decent results. My current Bigma is HSM OS and I use the SR on my K1 instead...it is superior to the Sigma OS. Same with my K5IIs...found SR better and faster there too.

I loved your shot... I think it is mostly a matter of processing. I prefer it like this.....hope you don't mind.

As a general guide, I find that 1/200 will get you a decent handheld Bigma shot most of the time. Anything faster is gravy, and I'll take it when I can!

Here is one I just shot as I was typing this......1/125 @ 500mm handheld. (Shot in K1 Crop Mode and cropped another 50% in processing)

One I shot earlier today also 1/125 handheld @ 500mm

There is some blur when subjects are on a limb that may be moving a little in the breeze...and SR won't help that. It takes some time to figure out what you can do with a Bigma.....many just give up too fast. It takes time and practice at handholding to find your best bracing positions...I use one elbow against my chest quite often. You're doing great...just keep going!

Best Regards!

Thanks! Yes, the berries seem to be already ripe, but that's nothing special if Wikipedia is right: "The flowers are greenish-yellow with five small petals; they are produced in umbels in autumn to early winter and are very rich in nectar. The fruit is a greenish-black, dark purple or (rarely) yellow berry 5–10 mm diameter with one to five seeds, ripening in late winter to mid-spring."

This adorable young bear briefly visited my yard a couple weeks ago. The bear's coat may be shedding a bit earlier than usual due to the warm winter - and also young'uns often have lighter fur color than adults - but by fall it will be a deep, lustrous black.

The sky in the second image makes it something special. From the time it was first introduced (which I remember), the 400 f6.3 Spiratone was known to be one of those lenses that is far better than it had any right to be at the price. I believe the basic design/formula was sold under a variety of brand names other that Spiratone..

Thanks Guys for the encouragement words, poorly yielded with the sigma 150-500mm HSM handheld, looks like a good lens to capture the speedy movement should be the legendary DA* 300mm
