I had a copy of the A*600 f5.6 for a while but didn't get to use it much because it was rather heavy. A tripod is definitely required. Also, the tripod foot is located too far back so the lens is not balanced. You will need to get a long mounting plate to move the centre of gravity forward to balance the lens. CA could be bad with this lens; at least for the copy I have. I also found it difficult to get sharp pictures but it may just be my technique. $1800 is a decent price but the condition of the lens is a big factor.
I think I will go with a Gimble head to do the lifting ..

Something to keep in mind is that the field curvature of the 600/4 and the 300/2.8 are substantial enough at MFD to impact the DoF.
Interesting Thanks

Thanks for posting reference back to those images. I had a 1000 f11 reflex for about a year, but despite much effort, including shooting on a bright sunny day (to maximize shutter speed) and mounting it on a modified wooden surveyor's tripod that was much heavier than the lens + camera (my LX), I was never able to get a "keeper." I finally decided that the reflex was just, well, no good. It did not have acceptable IQ.

Have a look....

My Pentax Forum "Porch Birds" collection went over 1000 images,
Porch_birds Slideshow by Norm_Head | Photobucket

I've posted the link to the slide show, but I can't watch more than 200 images without dying of boredom. Birds are exciting for 5 minutes, then it's time to move on to something else.

I think I may have to start breaking these up, year by year.

My third attempt at getting some pics of Whimbrels that have been passing through over the last week or so:

And then they were gone:

A shame as I don't like to flush these tired migrants. I blame the loud K-r Shutter! - will be picking up my K3 from the repair place today.
With DA*300 and 1.4xTC, cropped

But that's the thing with the thread, it shows you what people who use the same equipment you are, are doing. You don't have the excuse "well he's got a better camera than me" or any other excuse. It just inspires you to get better.

A few more bird shots from this morning handheld K3 DA*300 w/DA 1.4 TC. I don't believe I cropped any of these, if I did it was very minimal. I also get bored with my bird shots but it is practice for when I can get out in the field. I also would like to find some A* longer than what I have but better IQ than my 150-500 Sigma... Will have to wait a little while until the $ build back up after springing for the 3 DA*'s i just got I am in the market if anyone knows of some good glass ??
