Originally posted by riseform Thank you for the nice comments. Honestly I felt I blew a golden opportunity with that kestrel. The sun angle was perfect and the kestrel wasn't too interested in flying off and having its catch challenged by another predator. I was lucky to happen by and tried shooting from an idling truck with the lens resting on the side view mirror while another truck was rapidly approaching from behind. I was spinning dials like crazy trying to find a combination that would retain good feather detail at this range while still freezing the rapidly feeding head movements and not blow highlights. Sure enough the passing truck scared him off before I could get the exact combination I hoped for.
I think that has happened to most of us here. We try to get that great ISO 100 shot, fiddling with the camera settings and pushing SR to the limit, and are unprepared when the animal moves. Heck, last month I did something very similar with a pair of young bald eagles.
But at least you still did well and got a very good shot, one that I would certainly love to have in my portfolio.
