Thanks guys. TC makes really good combo with DA*300 and K-1. No problem with focusing, but I don't like the crop format on K-1. Unfortunately vignetting is a pain on FF. I guess it's not a big problem for Ricoh to adjust this TC for FF, lets say for an extra $100 in price.
Will test this combo on K5iis later. There is the island at the local park where 300mm alone just is not enough to catch the most interesting moments.

My wife, daughter and I are presently taking a short tour down the Oregon coast and I tried some shots of my daughter with the Sig 500 I really like the isolation this lens provides.
500mm portrait lens.
I love it!

I can't speak for the K-1, but the Tamron Pz-AF 1.4x doesn't vignette on the FF K1000 with either the DA* 300 or Tammy SP AF 70-200.

Hummingbird hanging out, feeding among the trumpet honeysuckle.
Shot at our honeymoon cottage last week... St. John, USVI - What an incredible place!

Can you show a test image of K-1 + TC + DA*300 and one without the TC so I can see how much vignetting the TC causes? And if its not to much trouble, one pair of images at close focus and one pair at infinity focus.

AMEN, I took an insant hate to the crop format. Fortunately, I have horded enough FA Glass to survive as soon as I beat the baffle out of my 60-250 zoom. I found the instructions elsewhere for removing
that baffle. I'v e got FA primes at 24,35,50,77 100macro &135, as well as 300, 400, and 600 and with that zoom, I'm in business.

Here is the one to infinity (with TC), one close focus (with TC- reflections in water), one for BIF (with TC slightly misfocused on an eye)
First it seems not much trouble, easy to fix it in LR, but when, for example, the bird is in tight frame, the "radiant" shadows are a pain to fix in LR fast.

Yep, I read about Tamron, but really loved Pentax TC. Well it's always crop mode, and K5iis

In case you would like to compare the distance, here is the image of the same buildings as on first picture, taken from the same spot from the balcony with 77mm. 420mm vs 77mm

Thanks! In my opinion it looks useful to a crop factor of 1,2x.

Pick up a Pentax 1.4x-S. The one I had back in the day was quite decent, I sold it because the reach with the 1.7X AFA is a bit more. Pass up the -L version: it only works with a limited set of lenses because it actually goes up into the lens from the mount. M 400 throat is too narrow. I tried it and had to drop back to the 1.4X.
