That "mosquito hawk" is some kind of dragonfly. In the Pacific Northwest they use "mosquito hawk" for a very large crane fly that does look very much like a huge mosquito, rather than a mosquito catcher. The body is about 1.25 inches long.

Ain't that the truth. We built a house with a tile roof and a central chimney with fireplace. If the starlings weren't nesting under the tiles, they were falling down the two story plus attic tall chimney. Opened the fireplace screen once and six of them flew all over the room dropping ashes and soot everywhere.
I had a Starling in the basement once. Fell down the chimney and came out of the furnace duct. It was flying around bashing into the windows. Had one of Otis's northern cousins come out of the hot water heater duct in another part of the house...

We had a cat that started staring at the chimney clean out door in the basement. She had been at it a couple of days, I was standing watching her stare and heard noises from the door. Scooted her out, opened the door, stood away, and out came a very dirty, tired, thirsty and hungry squirrel which went out the basement door to freedom. He/she was lucky is wasn't burn season.

The Black Skimmers are now at Prime Hook. I find they feed in the morning, this morning was low tide and the skimmers were far out but there were hundreds of them. I will try again in a week when high tide is at dawn and brings the skimmers close in, near to where you can set up to photograph them.
Here's a couple in formation way out - substantial crops.

Couple shots of Ospreys with K-5 and Tamron 300 f/2.8 and 2X TC. First at. f/11 (f/22 equivalent) Second at f/4.5 (so f/9 equivalent, I believe). Both are cropped.

Also, a GBH in flight. Same lens/camera. Set to f/10.

Thank you all for the kind words. I really like this lens. Not as easy as full blown autofocus, but it can get the job done. I don't mind manual focus lenses.
I love the Pentax glass, even from film era. My next lens I am getting is SMC Pentax-A* 600mm F5.6 ED [IF], this one should go nice with K-1. I can only dream to get anything like SMC Pentax-FA* 600mm F4 ED [IF]...maybe someday :-))
SMC 500mm f/5.6 lens can produce nasty CA or fringing in certain conditions, but I learned how to avoid that. If someone has this lens and need some hints how to get most out SMC 500mm f/4.5 , I am more than happy to respond with answers. I was just about ready to order K-3 with a battery grip, but instead I am getting K-1. I really love the K-3, but in the long run I would get K-1 anyway, so why not now.
Beauty of K-1 is that I can shoot in "Crop mode" even with FF lenses, I will get 16 MP crop, same as mine K-50 which is 16 MP camera. For sure it won't be 24 MB like K-3, but with K-1 I get the best of the both sides....shooting "Crop mode" when needed and if I can fill the frame then I am way ahead with 36 MP. K-1 only shoots around 4.5 FPS and that is enough for me.
But the main reason I want K-1 is better dynamic range and low light conditions, Right now in the Pacific Northwest the weather is good, many sunny days. When cloudy, rainy and overcast days comes in (it can last weeks or even months), I should benefit from K-1 FF sensor. At least that is what I am hopping for :-)).
