But you could shoot in Live View with no delay
I think you would struggle to see if the bird is in focus

This female Spruce Grouse was cooperative but the sky was very dark. The first shot was at ISO 800, then it moved off the trail and into the forest - the remaining 3 are at ISO 3200 and uncropped.

K-3, DA*300mm
All shots looked great.

K-3, DA*300mm
Great detail for such high ISO

I think I may have to invest in a K-3or K-3ii sometime. Can anyone tell me if the K-3ii focusing is exactly the same as the K-3?

i follow this thread a lot and have a da300 f4 with TC 1.4. I am also getting friday the Pentax 150 x 450 lens.

My concern is how you all carry your gear when hand holding and your support systems on tripod.

I have never had a lens this large but intend to learn how to use it. Any suggestions?

My sugestión is k5iis Tc and 150-450 on a sturdy tripod for stationary targets and k 3 with da 300 for moving hand held shots on a neck strap

In good light I find hand holding is fine, but if I'm struggling I defer to a monopod from time to time.

Ever tried to track a bird in live view... I really wanted it to work but in the end, gave up and sold the K-01.
I tried this one day with the k-01 and a 400mm. I had one of the screen hoods like a hoodman with an eyecup on the end of it which at least made seeing the birds possible. Unfortunately it was a flock of nighthawks just before dusk. My keeper rate was... I haven't tried it since, but I want to.

This little bird was about 17 meters (55 feet) away. I managed to nail focus with the K1 and DFA150450 with TC, using LV and electronic shutter, low iso and super low shutter speed, and so I could not believe how sharp it came out apsc cropped and cropped again 50%, so that's 813mm equivalent x 2 = 1626mm.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unreal results. I can't think of anything I've seen with the 150-450 that doesn't completely impress me. I am one more BH or Adorama sale price away from owning it!!!

Except for the distance, the shooting conditions are pretty much ideal: Feisol CT3371 tripod 37mm carbon tube (the kind of large tripod used to support a 600mm f4 lens), low ISO (no noise) a bit of end-afternoon sunlight, center point AF (on the bird), aperture f10 (stopped down 2/3rd from f5.6; it's f10 because of one stop loss through the TC), I was a few meters away from the camera/tripod and triggered the shutter with the IR remote control so that my own body motion do not induce camera motion via the wooden floor. I guess it's pretty much the maximum this DFA150450+TC can resolve. Actually, what was sticking was how well the K1 AF works with the TC (f8) it's as fast as without TC and it's rather accurate, I was very surprised.

Agree, all those ideal factors happening simultaneously played a major role in achieving these results, but the results DID happen. I have major 150-450 jealousy. I do not own a K1 (i own a K3), but I'm really anxious to own one and begin the learning curve to achieving some fantastic results. I'm sure it won't happen instantly.

A very wet eagle, and a loon. The loon was late afternoon, almost dark and far away. I tried the electronic shutter and was impressed with the results.
