Don't worry. I was fine. He hardly noticed me!

The EXIF entry for focal length is a bit odd, saying the 35mm equivalent is 459mm.

exasperatingly, the AF failed immediately
Might it be that the K-1 was in crop mode, or thought it was in crop mode before the failure?

Took a few wood duck photos today. There were many to choose from, but this one was my favorite. It was the clearest, and the reflection came out great. K3+DA*300

Some shots trying out the AFA 1.7 on the DA*60-250 with the K3. At the local zoo.

425mm f6.7, 1/250s, ISO125

425mm f7.1, 1/250s, ISO100

425mm f6.7, 1/160s, ISO2000. The light was not very good here but luckily I had a guard rail to use as a support.

425mm f7.1, 1/200s, ISO1250

It certainly takes some getting used to. If the light is really good focus will lock instantly. By the time I took the last two photos clouds had rolled in so focus was a bit tricky.

Nope. It's the lens. The K1 was in auto-select crop, and it went into crop for FF when the 300 was attached, but when I switched it to FF only, the 300 would still not AF, and when I got home I tested it on my K3, and still the 300 would not AF. Nuts! Screw drive might be slower and noisier, but I have many older, much more heavily used screw-AF lenses and not one of them has failed, ever.

There are many SDM lenses that I would like to own but I can't see how I would explain it's failure to my wife. I now have 3 AF Sigma lenses all FF. An FA 50 and all the rest are MF lenses. Of my 4 wide angle focal length only one needs to be focused, the others have very short focusing ranges before infinity. All my longer stuff is fast enough for focus confirmation to help. Yes a lot of it is Legacy lenses but the images are great so why not use them?

Thanks WPRESTO. Yes it's not easy to take as compare to the static shots. If situation allows, will try to capture BIF beside the stationary.

The pipits provided me with some good practice with the FD 400mm f4.5 - tricky little things scampering around in the grass. Overall I was feeling quite good about seeing the focus in the evf. I need to diy st to make flicking the ring on the FD to NX adapter to stop down easier. These were probably the best:

And I snapped a lapwing.

Had to take advantage of a sunny day and drive out to Montezuma NWR.

Strong SE wind was blowing the birds out away from the wildlife drive. At least 20 species of water fowl, I saw more than half of them

Northern Shovelers

I saw at least 5000 Canadas. Probably more.

Ruddy Duck and American Coot (There might have been more Coot than Canada Geese...)

American Wigeon and American Coot

Lesser Scaup Greater Scaup

Ring-necked Duck & more Coot

Some of the wigeon drakes had green heads, but most didn't.

Ring-billed Gull Herring Gull

In this shot: Gadwall, Redhead, Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked Duck, Pied-billed Grebe, American Wigeon, and Canada Geese

Female Common Goldeneye. The closest I was able to get any duck today, and she was back-lit...By this time I had accidentally changed to F/7.1 and didn't notice...

Gadwall

Sandhill Crane
