K-3 with SMC A 400mm f5.6

out with the bison today - unfortunately, they spent most of the day in tall grass:

Blue Jays have been bullying the other birds at the feeder...

Always nice to see a House Finch that doesn't have conjunctivitis...

I have a 12 foot long 1x6 plank that goes between two trees that I put Blue Jay food on, plus I throw food on the ground for them… ut they are still Bullies. Ijust find spreading them out over a wider area keeps them busy, and they don't spend as much time at the small bird feeders. Plus standing there with a long lens bothers them. The smaller birds take that as an opportunity t get in there and get some seed.

Steve, nice shots and great learning examples for me. I assume that once you were set up all you had to do was switch out the two bodies between shots? If so, I'm seriously confused.. After much reading on the topic of Full Frame vs Cropped sensors I believed that I understood. My belief was that, as an example, 600mm is 600mm from the primary lens objective to the focal plane and that the magnification remains the same across sensors and that what changes is the angle of view or field of view. For that to be true the moon in your to shots would need to be the same size with only the framing (field of view) changing. In your pics both the size of the object and the field of view have changed. Guess that what I thought was reality ain't so??

Thanks Woody. Yep, I just switched bodies. You are correct. Only the angle of view changes. What I did here was crop both images to 3200 px wide so more of the K-3 image was included. This is why APS-C is preferred for distance shooting because less cropping is required.

This Cattle Egret is still on the Toronto waterfront, and much more cooperative this time. We seem to have an incursion of these birds in various locations across Ontario.

A Shoveler having a shuffle

A pair of Gadwall - plain at first sight but lots of detail in the plumage.

All with the K-3, DA* 300mm and 1.4x TC

K-1 and Tamron SP AF 300 2.8 with F-1.7x AF adapter (510mm ƒ4.5)

ISO 400, ƒ4.5, AV

Dufferin Islands Park, Niagara Falls, On

I forgot the K-3 so instead of little birds I took picture of the available big birds.

Harder time getting well focused tracking shots with the HD 55-300 but still had a few opportune moments.

Red-shouldered Hawk

I think an intermediate-morph Swainson's Hawk

California Gull and a Dungeness crab

Blue Heron and gopher

Blue Heron and a Lexus

*No crabs were harmed in the making of these photos. Can't say the same for the gopher. The rest of the photos in the set got a bit gruesome.

After my return with the k-3

K-3 and Tamron SP AF 300mm 2.8 IF [ED] and F 1.7x AF Adapter
ISO 640, ƒ4.5 or ƒ5.6, AV

Dufferin Islands Park
I had some time to spend trying to get house sparrow pictures. I was there they were there, I had the K-1 instead of the K-3 and couldn't get close enough. I went home got the K-3 and waited, and waited, and waited, after a half hour they turned up.

Stop withholding! I've never seen a Heron with anything but an aquatic specimen in its beak. I want to see a beak-speared gopher!

Nice. Vibrant shot with a lot of character.
