Oriental Dwarf Black-backed Kingfisher, winter migratory species from the mainland. Managed to get the improved shot compare to last year.

Back about 40 years ago a visitor to the Monetzuma National Wildlife Refuge in central NY got a set of photos of a great blue heron spearing a muskrat and then swallowing it whole. Unfortunately they were taken with a Kodak 126 Cassette camera from a distance. They will eat anything they come across. I have seen them eat some pretty big snakes.

I've been carrying camera and lens around the Conwy RSPB in vain recently, so tried a small reserve up the coast known as the Spinnies, run by the North Wales Wildlife Conservation Trust. There are two hides and resident kingfishers are a main attraction.

And I took some pics at the feeders:

I second that. Such colour. Our Kingfishers look dull by comparison.

Geez Gary, your Kestrals are a lot less wary than the ones we have around here, I'm beginning to think you carry around a pocket full of mice - really nice shots
I was able to get a few shots of a Barred Owl today, first for me of one these guys. It actually followed me and my dog I guess it was curious.

Maybe looking for an opportunity. How big is the dog? A friend out walking his dog felt a breeze by his face, cartwheeled his small dog back to him, and a hawk struck the sidewalk where the dog would have been. He said that his bewildered dog gave him a look of "now why did you do that to me?"
