Normally all I see are tracks from these guys..... we had about four feet of snow last weekend and it has made it pretty tough for the wildlife to get around. We have 25 odd wild turkeys that hang around close our home and I think they drew this guy in. He gave me a long hard look and decided I wasn't a threat and he continued stalking a couple of the turkeys. He flushed them but didn't have any luck and then he just melted away.
Great shots - so elusive.

Remarkable!
I imagine that was quite the experience!

On our trip to Nunavut in 2015 we were expecting to see Muskox but missed them. We weren't expecting to see Wolverine:

I finally got some sun and some time, well, I only got some time because my snow blower froze up and I'm waiting for it to unthaw under a tarp with an electrics heater.

I got one of everyone present today.

First the news, one of the male goldfinches has started to change colour. His breeding plumage is coming in...

@useraccessdenied

a while ago we were discussing using online resources to find owls

this morning by dog woke me at four
I let her out
she didn't need to relieve herself she wanted the screech owl on the porch railing

I figured if it was going to be an owl day i'd drive forty miles to where a short-eared owl had been sighted (ABA)
too dark for BIF shots but I found two within a couple of miles of where they'd originally been seen
both were diligently hunting stubble fields

a mile past that watched a red tail giving a flock of pigeons heart attacks

just a bit further on at a creek where I thought I would get some songbirds when the sun got high enough I found a bald eagle trying to catch a goose for breakfast

things kind of petered out so I stopped at a dead end to have cup of coffee and saw these guys wandering west down another creek
a couple of yelps and gobbles....

Wow, that's one helluva day!

I've been so busy lately that all my recent wildlife adventures consist of walking the dog around the park and watching Carolina Wrens bounce around my back yard...
Hopefully in a few weeks I'll have more time to get out and shoot/explore.

I have to say, the ABA website is not exactly easy to navigate... There's a lot going on; difficult to just search location/breed/time stamp.
Unless I'm doing something wrong...

not too bad

I am going to have breakfast and take a nap in minute

this is the mailserv for Maryland Birding News | @ABA

for instance it looks as though somebody saw a horned owl on 29jan

I use ebird's maps if i'm looking for sightings of a particular species

last year I decided to finally get a picture of a yellow-headed blackbird
found locations with annual sightings and drove circuits until I found a flock of the damn things
got a bonus of several bluebirds
and ran across some varmint hunters calling coyotes so I got to see a couple of species of hawks and a very confused turkey vulture

you know I've seen more owls walking the dogs than trying to do it on purpose
just listen and carry a good flashlight
caught this one via flashlight...colors suck but it's an owl (barred)

The little tit* in the first series of picture is a really a gorgeous little bird, and could not be photographed better. The wasp is a great capture. I am always looking forward to what you will post next.

* Blue tit perhaps? I don't know European birds, and can only manage some NA species reliably (Robin, Crow, Duck)

And now for something completely different

camera: Pentax K2
lens: Tamron SP 60B 300mm
film: Kodak Ektar 100
developing & scans: Dwayne's Photo
post processing: Picassa 3

A Nikon friend and I trekked out to a local marsh to photograph stuff, around a year ago.
This was the most "interesting" thing I saw that day.

I really like the photos I'm getting from the Tamron SP 180 & 300mm lenses. I have lately added to the herd:
__ Tamron 60EP 300mm auto focus
__ Tamron 65B 400mm manual focus
And I am waiting for the arrival of a:
__ Tamron 31A 200-500mm manual focus zoom

The view through a Pentax viewfinder and a SP lens is always beautifully bright, clear and crisp

At least it was easy to stalk.
