Great shot. Beautiful bird.

Here is one from last week. With K-5iis + Sigma 50-500

Joining the club!

I have just now received SMC Pentax-M 400mm f 5.6, Excellent (just a few barely visible scratches, minor dust, minor brassing on metal ring around the integral hood), less than $300. This is 5th or 6th great transaction with Japanese eBayers, so time to start looking for birds and airplanes.

I have plenty to learn about shooting with this FL, but my first few (handheld) test shots are promising. Now I have to begin looking for an adequate tripod head to support this weight. It is a pleasure to observe Pentax-M quality in such a large prime lens.

NOTE: EXIF information is incorrect. FL is not 200mm but actually 400mm with apparent FL equal to 600mm on the K-3 camera relied upon for these test shots.

I don't think I have posted any pictures in this thread...yet! And now I have two of a Godwin flyby. It used to be a very common bird in oud meadows en fields but their numbers have declined after farmers with government aid intensified the use of the land... Both with the DFA150-450. Shooting BIF's is a skill I have not mastered fully yet but these turned out allright. I must say that I am positively surprised by the ability to of this lens in combination with the K-3 to lock focus and produce a acceptable result. Both are slight crops.

Cheers, Remco

FYI: I remember when this lens was introduced simultaneously with Sigma's 300 f4 AF macro. Most testers thought the 300 had somewhat better IQ than the 400.
I bought the lens based on the lens review in the forum but not having much success even after fine tuning the focus.

Two things that is stopping me.
1. I am in India now and shipping (with customs duty hassles) is a big issue
2. I just picked up a FA300. Will add a TC for reach later on.

So, I am good for now.

But, please do check the AF fine adjustment if you are having trouble. You can also put the body in debug mode to get even more focus adjustment. I have the same issue with my Sigma 50-500 (particularly for birds on ground, and if I am shooting from a height)

Thanks Bob, but they stil could be a bit crisper. I am not getting consistent good results and that has to do with practising the technique a bit more.

The Boys Are Back In Town

A cross from today, working at home on some overdue PP, a commotion from outside and there he is on the outbuilding roof.

nice photos

years ago, I was a passenger going down a rural road in Northwest Iowa when a cock pheasant flushed as we approached. He paralleled the pick up truck for 30 - 45 seconds, so close that if the window had been down I could have grabbed it out of mid air.

They used to be very plentiful in multiple mid western states here in the US but through several factors among them the farmers plowing and planting fence row to fence row leaving no boundary belt of grasses and weeds and the mowing or burning of the road ditches, there was severe habitat loss and now they are only common in a few states.

they are beautiful imports from China originally I believe

you have nicely captured the side shots, now we eagerly and impatiently await the full frontal, top and tail photos. When will you post those??
