Common Gallinule comes no closer to B.C. than California, whereas American Coot is common in southern B.C.

The American Ornithologists' Union originally considered the North American gallinule to be a distinct species: Common Gallinule (
Gallinula galeata. Then, for a few years they lumped it with Europe's Common Moorhen (
Gallinula chloropus). After new research was published recently, they split them again, so we're back to Common Gallinule for the North American version.
