I have a bird identification book, but you need to know what sort of bird it is to find it in the book.
I also know that birds of prey are in one section of the book and parrots are in another, but there are a lot of finchy, sparrowy, things that you need to know a bit about before you can find the right section!

as a little kid I faced a similar problem when I didn't know how to correctly spell a word

my parents said, "look the word up in the dictionary"

how do you look up the word in the dictionary when you didn't know how to spell the word correctly ???

It's those tiny finchy, sparrowy things like pardalotes that Victoria has a lot of and I struggle with, Rod.

Parrots, seabirds and the like I'm okay with, it's when my wife gets her Field Guide out and asks what I've just seen, I stammer to her disapproval, "Um, kinda brown and small. Quick to disappear."

As far as I'm concerned, until we get a picture good enough to identify it with in the bird book, sitting in front of the computer, we don't really know what it is. And even then the birders have had to correct me quite a few times.

I've learned a lot by following Bird ID groups on Facebook. But not everyone has as much time as me

I use Merlin Bird ID from Cornell on my iPhone. Sometimes I have to tell Cornell what the bird is because it doesn't belong here. One occasion was a lost/confused Snow Goose on a friend's front lawn. Many things wrong with it: it was alone. Snow Geese travel in clouds of birds. Snow Geese don't forage at 4,000 ft (1,400 m) in the Rockies. It stayed a week and then got bored without company and left.

Most of the time Merlin will ID the bird for me quite nicely. Free app, and I'm pretty sure it works on Android as well as iOS.

Hi clackers, from the picture it's look like an Australian Kestrel to me, the smallest falcon and one of the most frequent sighted raptors in Australia.

It's possible, Pentaxians, but the talons weren't yellow, and it wasn't small!
