The reason I don't get rid of the thistles...It's about Goldfinch nesting time...

This one was from the 12th.

I had a neighbor who was upset because I wouldn't sell him my ground

I was working near the barn when a guy from the county showed up saying they'd received complaints about noxious weeds
"you'll have to chop them"
"nope"
"why not?"
"because of them"...the patch of thistle was covered with goldfinches..."and i'm not cutting the pot either"..that ditch was a diner for mourning doves (which I firmly believe accounts for the way they fly)

surprisingly no citation and a handshake

later another neighbor mowed the pot after his kids began harvesting it
it was kind of cute...he asked me after the fact if it was okay

Absofreakinlutely! I caught on that unless I was going to dive into the darkroom myself (which I wasn't gonna) photography was not going to happen for me. Once digital changed that, I was all in!

Images were captured at Whiting Overlook Park in Midland County, Michigan, with RMC Tokina 500mm 1:8 (bought through the Marketplace) on my Pentax K-S2, supported with an inexpensive chest pod bought years ago from a camera shop's clearance table.

Images were processed (including cropping) in Lightroom 4 and the Nik Collection's Dfine.

Regrettably, I do not know what happened immediately after the series of three images involving the two bucks.

Thanks to everyone who posts in this thread!

Best wishes,
Stu
Stu,
If they were like me last week, they slipped out of Benzonia and went up to Traverse City and found a pristine F24-50 at the Camera Shop, talked to a local with 645Z in hand working on boat images, and bought three cherry pies with crumble crusts as a peace offering. Jason brought out a box of all types of old Pentax and Nikon lenses to go through. Super nice folks there. The Betsie and Platte Rivers were packed though.
Wonderful summers up there!

Excellent!
I'm glad you had such a great time.
Sorry you needed a peace offering.
Best wishes.

smf and aslyfox,

I have photos of Elk taken in July 2016 when the velvet antlered males group up to lounge around meadows. They were do this posturing and "grooming" also. It seems to be mainly the younger to mid-aged bucks.

A young grizzly. It looks quite small, wondering if it is a second year bear without a mom. I don't know what the bird is. Also a hoary marmot.

Two useful, widely used identifications to know about, one for flowers, the other for birds:

GDYC = G-D yellow composite

and your photo has captured an MLBB = mysterious little brown bird

being at the right place at the right time is very important, I have found, in photographing birds

as well as being lucky to be at the right place and right time

IOW this encounter was totally unexpected - I have only seen this Great Blue Heron once before despite multiple visits to the Topeka Zoological Park

I like this combination K 3 + HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 ED DC AW hand held

1 and 3 original

2 and 4 pp and cropped

while waiting for these bees to stop flying around and enter the blossom, I had my first sighting of a hummingbird attracted to flowers as opposed to feeders

unfortunately, it was over so quickly I didn't get a chance to photograph it.
