Well it wasn't too cold yesterday so I made a quick run up to the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River with the Sigma 500/4.5. The Eagles were in residence (along with lots of gulls) but kept their distance: these are heavily cropped even though I used the 1.4x TC.

This guy's got a fish.

I like this one because it's got gulls, a pair of mature Eagles, a juvenile and a GBH.

Sounds like a fun morning, similar to mine yesterday, it is really a treat when there is at least something to see even if it is far off. Maybe you should add a row boat/gondola to the mix and see if you can get closer

Thanks! Just trying to get some gear that works well together until I can get a 600mm!

No way! That's a rough stretch of river: fast and rocky and then you have the fluctuations from power generation at the dam. I've canoed & kayaked it for fishing purposes but I'm not going out there in winter &/or with $6K of camera gear. I'll wait for the eagles to come to me.

Sigma 500/4.5

This bird a bit tough to shoot as he usually hide in between the big leaves.

So far, that approach hasn't worked for me. But I live in NE Philly, so about all that come to me are gulls, geese, and sparrows. There aren't even any pigeons up here.

Someone was also asking about stacking teleconverters. I think "I'm the guy" used a Promaster 1.7x on his DA*300mm giving him what looked like great results to me. It seems not all teleconverters work well with various lenses.
I think you remember a shot I posted with usable but not great results from stacking the Pentax 1.7x with Pentax 1.4xL on a A*400/2.8.

Great shots posted recently folks. Makes me miss the big glass so I can play too.

Great shots Ken....these and all your previous posts...simple awesome. Very envious of that Sigma 500f/4.5, but mostly how you get up close to all these different colorful birds. Do you live in paradise or the local zoo.....?

Thanks Kevin.
I staying in Singapore, down here have some resident birds and now is migratory period & seems like this few months is not bad, the birds keep coming in, some of them are really colourful like the black-backed kingfisher, the pittas & bee-eaters.
I also travel to Malaysia and Thailand for more exotic birds.
When spotted a bird I'll shoot 1st, then move closer afew steps, shoot & repeat.
Some were shot inside the camouflage hide to as close as 3-5m.

I thought you had some of the "epic" glass, did you sell it in favor of something else?

sniff..sniff...yes. Another member who is laying low so far is the new owner while I try to learn some new tricks with lots of new but smaller glass.
