Dog food has become a regular part of my "Algonquin Park feed mix." Many birds like a bit of it every now and then. I don't use it in my back yard, wolves, foxes and Pine Martens and stray dogs like it too. I don't mind those animals in the park, in my back yard? Not so much.

My first ever snowy owl seen this weekend. Bright morning and not much luck getting an open eye shot but what an amazing bird.

Among the raptors, the really amazing species is the barn owl. Their ears are majorly asymmetrical and extremely sensitive, so much that they can hear and successfully pounce on a mouse in complete darkness. More or less a bat-bird.

White-breasted Nuthatch. Taken thru a window, as they are very timid.

Mighty Dog! This last bag the chucks are hard and the cardinals get frustrated if they can't crush it in their beaks! 50 lb bag of black oil sunflower seed is $16 at Tractor supply, so far cheaper than dog food.....

Well the sigma APO arrived (post #27496), and it's a good one. But it turned out to be a 500mm f7.2 not the 400mm f5.6 I was hoping for. Anyone do a swap??

My Black oil seed costs me $32 a bag, send me some of yours..
I use little bits of Salmon /Sweet Potato dog food, they come in pretty small pieces, the Jays seem to be able to handle them.

Picked up my repaired K-3 yesterday. When there's a crowd of noisy Mallard at a customary feeding spot, it's worth looking out for other wildfowl that wouldn't normally eat human-provided food but just seem to like the company.

It's been a while since I've share an image...

Here's one from this winter - my first ever encounter with a snowy owl!
I've lived here for 12 years and have yet to get a decent image of one. It took 6 miles of walking down the beach in single digit temps to find her; walking through the high tide in knee deep water making sure not to spook her off as I approached the dune.
I kept a distance and army crawled inch by inch, making sure not to disturb her.
Shot from about 75 yards away with a K-3ii + 1.4xTC + DA*300. Cropped a good bit too...

I was ecstatic on my walk back to the truck; I should have been smarter about staying dry... I definitely felt like any longer out there would have been creeping towards hypothermia.
Definitely took some time to warm back up before I could drive home.
