He/she looks marvelously fierce: a great capture. For those who aren't familiar with the burrowing owl, it is 19-28 cm (8-11 in) tall, slightly larger than an American robin (Thanks Wikipedia). That might be a big mouthful for a great horned ...

Yes the bird has been netted and ringed at some point. I have photographed this bird before, back in 2016

How do you like that Eckla mount? It must work well to hold a beast of a lens like that!

I also have the first version of the Kirk window mount.

I think the Kirk gives a more steady platform.

The reason why I had to get an Eckla mount is because the platform can be lowered [ the FA*600mm would not go through the drivers window when fitted to the Kirk in a Vauxhall Insignia]

We have just changed our daily driver for a Toyota Auris hybrid [great for creeping up on wildlife in electric mode] and the roof is slightly higher on this car and the FA*600mm will go through the window when fitted to the Kirk, but only just.

Thanks for sharing. I have a spot that is perfect for "from the car" shots. My gear is light enough to shoot handheld, but I dream of owning one of the super-telephoto lenses someday.

The male red-winged Blackbirds are back and practicing their raucous "song". Usually an early sign of Spring, but they may be in for a surprise as winter surely can't be finished with us yet.

Standing behind the audience with a long lens

I've been subscribing to a local radio station for several years and started taking photos of their plays back in 2013 as practice for me. To stay out of everyone's way I need the long lens and the DA*300 worked a treat on the K5 and the 150-450 enabled me to maintain distance to avoid distracting those watching. This scene was from the end of the play and being in the right place worked a treat.

Good catch, but I'd try stopping down to f11 with that x-300 zoom lens kombivan, should sharpen up a level. Bump the iso to 800 to compensate and keep a 1/x000 shutter speed, almost all my birding is at asa800 on my K5, it's one of the strengths of the model there is virtually no noise at 800. You could also try backing off the zoom a tad to ~280mm to see if that makes a discernable difference.

I used to dream that until a forum member pointed out that owning a heavy lens can make your life miserable.
