Great shots ... that is one narrow plane of focus!

I'd love to have that combo. I used to think it was too easy, but my Tamron 300 2.8 is six pounds, the A* is 6 kg. It's in a whole different league of weight. I still can shoot my Tamron 300 3.8 with TC hand held for about 5 minutes before I get tired.
I am use using my monopod again with the 400, after the first scary attempt. With the new lens strap (Op-Tech with lug mounts) I do not worry about dropping the 13 lb lens anymore but I need to install a hand grip on the monopod to help balance the very nose heavy set up. I have hand held the lens 3 times in 20 years, for me it's almost impossible to hold and focus the beast.

Yeah, I had one once: great optics but really hard to handle--like a greased cannon ball.

I'd have a question concerning your Sigma 300mm f2.8. Does this lens work as combo with 1.4x Pentax TC or 1.7x TC/AF adapter?
(By the way - do you still use it (or at least from time to time)?)

Thanks!
Yes, the lens works well with a 1.4X [not tried it with a 1.7X] I don't need to use it with a converter because I have 400,500 and 600mm lenses.

I still use it, mostly for aircraft.

It's a mega sharp lens.

Bruants des neiges / Snow Buntings [Plectrophenax nivalis]
Saint-Blaise-sur-Richelieu, Québec, Canada
2018.03.18

Pentax K-1 + FA*250-600 @470mm
ƒ/6.3 (almost wide open), 1/1600s, ISO 100

I forgot to close my aperture and many BIF shot I made for theses Buntings were not very good, but this one came out just great because they were pretty well aligned to the focus plane!

How many Lapland Longspurs [Calcarius lapponicus] can you see in this photo?

I strongly suggest that you open it in Flickr to enjoy all the details...

I was considering its purchase some years ago. Now it seems to be discontinued by Sigma in Pentax mount and this makes me think about it once again (as long as the last items are still available).
At the moment I have 3 lenses usable for birding/wildlife:
- DA*300 f/4 (usually with 1.4x TC)
- Sigma 150-500 f/5 - f/6.3
- DA560 f/5.6
Sigma 300mm f/2.8 attracts me as I suppose it might be used as combo with 1.7x or 2x TC, resulting into 510mm (f/4.7) or 600mm (f5.6), while being 650 gr. lighter than DA560 but mainly much shorter.
Decisions, decisions.

Been awhile since I posted due to "playing" with a D500 and 200-500, but I still have all of my Pentax gear and love the IQ it produces.

K-3II and 150-450.

A 2-shot merge of part of a flock of about 500 swans

Another flock at Turkey Point

And a flock flying overhead

K3 + SMC Pentax-DA* 300mm F4 ED [IF] SDM

I really needed a real video camera or an extreme wide angle lens

it is that time of the year

the lone hen was being circled by up to 12 drake mallards, they would move in close and then expand outward

note how the green head of the drakes changes as the light hits it in different angles

these are just part of the series, however, other than the circling and the following, nothing happened while I watched

were they just shy?

as far as I know, despite these ducks were at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska, they are not permanent residents
