If you think you might like to get into birding, a P1000 is cheaper than a DA*300 and gives you more reach. Personally I just love that my XG-1 gives me a chance at shots like this without carrying a lot of weight. The Nikon with a tripod would be a lot better.
The Online Photographer had some similar thoughts about this - interesting to read comments form some of his readers that echo your comments Norm.

One of my buddies is a birder in the Toronto area. He has an older Canon that approximate 800mm. Sometime I get the better shot, sometimes he does. He can't match my close ups, but anything at distance he may end up with the better shot. And he posts some very nice pictures.

My wife has a Pentax X-5 (~C$250) that works really well. You can compare some recent shots in the same place at the same time from our trip to Cypress Hills Interprovincial park here:

The bridge cameras are good for flocks and group shots - so much more depth of field.

My wife uses a Panasonic P&S with a 20x zoom range - 35mm equivalent 24-480mm - and she gets some really good shots at the long end. I'm constantly amazed at how well the little camera performs.

One of my birder buddies used to use a Nikon 400/3.5 manual focus lens with a 2x teleconverter on a D700. His distance shots were always better...

Unfortunately for me, I don't have one of those. Even when Pentax come out with the new 2x TC, Ill still only have 600 5.6. I Need one of those 400 3.5s. If only I had the money for an A*400 2.8. But even then, with the 1.7x, that would only get me to 680 ƒ4.5. For $4000 I'm guessing I'll never own one.

For the money involved my Tammy 300 2.8 seems like a really good deal. What's 100mm between friends?

K-mount definitely has some holes when it comes to long lenses. If I had known I would get into birding the way I did I probably would have held out until I could afford a Nikon body instead of buying the K-x in 2009...

Wait. It feels like you were writing about me
In 2009, I had a choice to pick a D90 (body only) or K-x + 2 lenses. I decided to go with 2nd option (I had just sold off my K200D) and once in a while think if I made a mistake as I am doing a lot of birding now.

Purple martin perched on a purpose-built nesting/colony facility. Deeply cropped from a 150~450mm image.

When I saw the title I was expecting two images, but the single is much better! Nice catch.
